Nelson cashes in at Sand Hill MX By Lee Denlinger BRENTWOOD, CA, JULY 13 The double points opener of the second annual six-race summer motocfl;>sS series promoted by Argyll Park and Sand Hill Ranch saw Honda-mounted' Jon Nelson make lhe Sand Hilllrack his own, laking firsl, second and lhird overalls in lhe 125cc, Open and 250cc Pro classes, respectively. "It's just one of those days when everything worked om," said Nelson. Nelson went one and one in the 125cc Pro class, but clashed with Honda rider Joey Schlag and Kelly Andris (Kiser Brothers Honda/Pro Circuit) in the Open Pro race. Nelson pulled up to third after a midpack Slart in the first mow. Th~ action belonged lo Schlag and Andris, however, who duked it out for the lead throughout t!Ie eight laps. . Schlag grabbed the holeshot and maintained the lead for three laps, when Andris opened up wide and took command. It was a momentary gain, however, as Schlag tracked him down and took Andris on lhe doubles. Schlag then rode to the checkers, followed by Andris and Nelson. Nelson had a much bener Slart in the second moto, and followed Schlag out of lhe holeshot. Schlag led the pack lo the checkers, while Nelson rode a steady second place position in front of third-placed Andris. Schlag's I-I gave him first overall in the Open Pro class, while Nelson took second overall with his 3-2 wins, leaving third place overall to Andris with a 2-3 scorecard. Andris' 2-2 wins in the 250cc Pro class gave him first overall, while Schlag took first and third in his heats for second overall, followed by Nelson, who took third overall with his 6-1 lally. The Pros mixed it up in the 250cc race. Nelson pulled the 14-member pack around the first lap in the first mow, but slipped to third as Schlag and Yamaha pilot Jeff Pistana edged him out of the lead. Andris pushed to fourth place by lap three from a seventh place Slart, and diced it up with Jeff Pistana in lhe fourth lap to lake over. the· second place slol. Then Andris reeled in Schlag, lhe two red machines seemingly tied together in the air as they took to the doubles and matched each other around lhe berms and the straighlaways. But Schlag prevailed, catching the checkers before Andris. The Pros were all over the board in the second moto. Nelson was in great slarting position as he came out of the holeshol, followed by Schlag and Pislana. Andris breathed their dust from an eighth place Slart, but powered to fourth place by the second lap. In lap three, Nelson was overtaken by Schlag, who held on to the lead until the white flag lap. Sumner and Frank Kaiser transferred from the first, and fastest ProAm heat. Dave Camlin barely came out on top in heat two over Billy Menzel, while Randy Rarideau and Jerry Thrune transferred from heat three, and Tim Pran and John Hundertmark transferred from the final Pro-Am heat. Camlin grabbed the holeshot in the Pro-Am main and led until lap five when he went high coming out of turn three. Pran and Jim Sumner quickly passed, and lhe next lap, Sumner moved into the lead, never lO be relinquished. Pratt look second while Camlin held on lO lhird. Bob Buffington grabbed lhe holeshol in the Junior main and led two laps before being passed by Recil Hart. Hart led the next five laps, while Farrell was moving lhrough traffic from a bad Slart. On lop eighl, ' Farrell took overthe lead to ilidinish. Hart look second, while Greg.Lague's late charge brought him up lO lhird. Mertens grabbed the holeshol in lhe Expert main with Dave Durrelle close behind. Mertens, however, had a better line lhrough turns one and two, while Durrelle's line caused excessive wheel spin on his R&B HarleyDavidson, and Mertens would pull away each lap. As they took lhe while flag, Durrelle made a desperation auempl unde Mertens in tum one. However, lhe spinning problem caught up with him as Mertens look a slight win. Mike Rhoads took lhird over Garth Brown and Tom Colson.
