Gates aces MankatoMX By Rolfe Otterness MANKATO, MN, JUNE 29 Bruce Gates topped a tough field of riders to win the 125cc Expert class at the only Mankato Cycle Club motocross of the year. The quick Honda-moumed rider, just recovering from an ankle injury, won both motos on the hilly, wooded terrain of the "Kato" Cycle Club's grounds. Gates also had the honor of winning the last full moLO of the day, as 'the rain, which staned falling during the second moLO, forced cancella tion of the remai nder of the event. Over 300 riders competed. Bryan Shiltl passed Rick Case several turns inLO the first 125cc Expen moto. Local star Donnie Schmit quickly LOre through the pack after a poor stan, gaining the lead before the end of the second lap. Gates tailed Shiltl for two laps before gelling by and when Schmit dropped out, (allegedly due LO bad gas) Gates took over the lead. Gates wem on to win with Shihl second and first Amateur. Jim ScOll and David Tail rounded out the LOp four. Light rain staned to fall in the second motoas Chad Winecke led the pack through . the first tum. As the moLO progressed, the surface became very slick and the Pro talem of Gates allowed him LO take another win. Winecke took second and first Amateur this time in what was his second moLO as an Expen. Tait, Greg Nelson, and Brian Fern all finished near the from in a confusing moLO and they took LOp points home for the da'y. Rich Pearson took the win in the first and only 250cc moLO. Jeff.Oldenberg moved up near the halfway point and dove inside Pearson's line before the tabletop jump. After taking the lead, he pulled away until a loose mOLOr mount boh backed out and SLOpped him from shifting. Pearson got by but Olden berg managed to shadow him for the rest of the race, while stuck in one gear. Greg Nelson and Jack Laine were closing but took third and fourth. Results PEE WEE: 1.
