Casey got in a good 14.61-second ride and they finished the first round with Casey in fourth and Halcomb in 12th. With all the broken bikes Halcomb needed only to make the lights to hold his ticket to the National but the Triumph fouled out at 600 feet. Casey blew the back tire on his Yamaha as he left the line on his second attempt so could not improve his position. But the first ride held for fourth. This gave him an eight-point advantage over Halcomb in this hillclimb and the last spot in the 750cc lineup for the 1986 National which wjll be held at Muskegon, Michigan on August 3.
