The event seemed like a mini National with competitors from Arizona for the first round of the southwest Challenge Series. Fifteen entrants from Arizona coupled with the five from northern California swelled the result sheets with 86 trialers. Fourteen sections traversed three time on Saturday and two loops of 12 sections for Sunday kept the riders Wood, Johnson top Secession MJC well occupied. The E",perts had three number one's entered, Scott Head, National Champion and northern California's number one, Andy Saum, Arizona champ and Matt Pritchard, the southern California champ. After the first loop on Saturday it looked like Head might be in for some competition. Dropping 20 poi n ts, Head led Pritchard and Saum both with 36. His next two loops totaled nine LO lead second place by 69 marks. The battle was then for second. David Pyle challenged for second on the second loop with 28 after loosing 4I on the first lap. Saum came back strong on the last loop for second. Ten points behind was Pyle with Pritchard, seven more than Pyle. Onl y seven Experts scored less than 150 points and five had over 200. After Saturday's rock bash a maJonty of the 18 competitors were hoping for a easier time on Sunday. Head again domjnated, scoring a seven and 16 on his two loops for a two-day total of 52. His score was the only one under 100 points. Saum had the third lowest marks for the day, but that was good enough for second overall; Pyle remained in th!rd. Fourth fellLO Pritchard, the last nder LO score under 200 for the weekend. David Webster recently arrived from his Scottish, Six-Day Trial finish to place fifth. Ex-New Zealander Peter Croft took home the Intermediate win. Croft led by one over Allen Anderson. On Sunday Croft left little doubt as to who the best rider was. Posting a 13 for the day, Croft had a winning margin of 20. Anderson still scored second after carding the third lowest points on Sunday. Olive Hannon had the second best score on Sunday which kept him at third place overall. Brian Hannon dropped a perfect 100forthe kid's class win. Lee Penington and jimmy Collins were tied on Sunday's score, but PenningLO.n's lower total secured second for him; all three were TYSO-mounted. Wood dominated the 250cc Amateur class with apparent ease, using a pair of holeshots LO win both moLOS while Bobby Gilbert scored 2-4 to claim runner-up honors. The baLLle for t1Urd-place gold was close as John Warren and David Downs battled in the final moLO. Downs held second position under intense pressure from Warren until the last lap when Downs did a "f1yin' W" and crashed over a low jump. Warren rode on LO the second-place finish that he needed to take th ird overa II. The 250cc Novice division saw the first moLO win go LO Allen Rucker over Philip johnson. Moto two was a different story as Johnson showed the way whiLe Rucker started at the back of the pack. Near theendofthe moto, Johnson took a spill and surrender~ the lead but his 2-3 score was sull good for top gold over Greg Elijah's 4-2. Tracey Clements got hung in the gate at the start of ~OLO two but quickly caught the pa.ck and fought his way through traffic. On the last lap, Clements caugh.t leader Elijah and went by for the lead in the le£thand sweeper entering the home stretch. Clements' 7-1 tally earned fourth overall behind Rucker's 1-6. Bo Shannon won the opening junior Mini moto and showed the way in moto two until a crash in the triple jumps landed him in the DNF column. Patrick Ashworth took over and won the moLO, neLLing first over- Arizona Desert Racing Association's (ADRA) Fifth Annual White Mountain 100. In his first race since Baja, Sweetland turned in a time of 3: 19:07 aboard the Desert Husqvama/Spectro/Gear/Trick-sponsored Husky 400, averaging 36.L6 mph. "It's a neat course, this was the first time I ever saw the whole thing. I'm glad to finish. I've DNFed here before," said Sweetland. Second in was series points leader Mike Powers on an Open class Premier KTM, finishing exactly six minutes back. Powers has yet to win an ADRA race this season, but has finished in the top three at all but the opener, where he was sixth. Sweetland has won four races, hut a DNF and a DNS puts him 65 points behind Powers after this, the sixth in the I I-race 1986 Desert Champion Series. The pair started together at the head of the pack, with Powers grabbing the holeshot and pulling away to a one-minute, 32-second lead over Sweetland and setting hot Lap of the day over the 30-mile loop through the White Mountains. Sweetland was still second on the trail, but had dropped LO fifth on time after one minor spinout and motor troubles. PiLLing at the end of lap one, he changed main jets because the bike was not up LO full power. Sweetland said, "Pat Duncan got by while I was in the pits, and I set out after him. The bike still wouldn't pull. In desperation, I decided to yank out the kill bULLon wiring, which turned out to be the trouble." After that, Sweetland soon caught Duncan, who had lost his rt:ar brake and let Sweetland pass Without a fight. Near the end of lap two, Sweetland had caught Powers and put the all. The 250cc Pro class saw Tim Terry, Mark Ashworth and Robbie Taylor take turns at the lead. Taylor moved to the front both times to win with a perfect score. Ashworth edged Terry in a tied score for second. Results EX: 1. ScOlt Head (52); 2. "'ndy Saum (141); 3. David Vie (149). ADV: 1. Michael Meschede(1 84); 2. Glenn Wrivht (237). SR ...: 1.
