Jim Long and Jeff Gonzales (84J I raced in the 500cc B class at Porterville, california until Gonzales crashed; Long took the class win. Albert Biscaglio, of Chowchilla, California, won the 250cc A division at the AMA Western Region short track in Porterville. Cook, Newell win Prairie Hills MX By Larry Johnson BERTHOUD, CO, JULY 6 SRAC motocrossers closed out the Fourth of July weekend at Prairie Hills on a track that stayed unusually moist due to 34 cloudy skies and periodic sprinkles. Stacey Cook and Dave Newell- each had lO come back in molO two to win overalls, but they succeeded. Cook and Mark Flesia freighttrained behind Tim Buchli for hal[ of moto one in the 125cc Pros. Then Flesia began to lose ground to the leaders, but they stayed close all the way. Cook made his move through the whoops on the last lap, but lost control and had to back oH, giving the win to Buchli. Cook trailed Buchli the first two laps in round two, then passed at the finish line. He stayed out front the rest of the way, but Buchli remained glued to his rear fender to the checkers. jim Mitchell gated well in round one of the Open Pros while Newell came out midpack, but Newell charged to Mitchell's tailpipe by lap two. On the next go-around, Newell tried to stuH underneath Mitchell in a left-bander, but Mitchell slammed the door and Newell went down. He remounted fifth and worked back to second at the nag, but Mitehdl won easily. Newell took no chances in round two, grabbing the holeshot with Mitchell in third. Mitchell quickly took over second, but Newell gradually pulled away leaving Mitchell 10 seconds behind at the finish. Andy Atkins holeshot moto one of the 80cc Experts and led all the way as Scott Fulcher and jared Ramsour both overcame bad starts to finish second and third, respectively. Fulcher led Atkins out of the gate in round two and Atkins tried desperately to get by for four laps. Then, shortly into lap five, he darted inside Fulcher and crashed. Fulcher went on to take the win and overall. Atkins was able to regroup and finished third behind Ramsour. Mark Poindexter and Dan Greenwood dominated the Vet Experts and Poindexter dominated Greenwood. Poindexter led Greenwood all of moto one, then gated badly in moto two as Greenwood took the holeshot. Ridings, Christy tangle at Calhoun Motocross By Jeff Jacobsen CALHOUN, GA, JULY 13 Gene Ridings and Danny Christy tangled in both 125cc and 250cc mows at Calhoun Motocross, trading wins. In the first 125cc moto, Mike Butler took the holeshot, but gave way to Ridings in the first lap. Christy took the second spot when Butler went down on the mole hill. In the second moto, Christy took the lead and shot dust on Ridings the rest of the race, taking first overall. However, in the 25Occclass, Christy took the first race but Ridings was tired of eating his dust so grabbed the holeshOl in the second molO and didn't let Christy catch up. Ridings took first overall. The Enduro race saw stiff competition between Billy Scoggins and Mike Waters. Waters had the lead until the second lap, when Scoggins passed on the mole hill, but once again lost the lead to Waters by the end of that lap. In the second moto, Scoggins had the lead until the second lap when Waters passed on the long straightaway, but on the third lap, both bikes tangled on the whoops with Scoggins coming out the victor in the race and overall. The Senior Mini was exciting with Luis Gonzalez taking the first holeshot, but going down in the back and having to pull oH with bike problems. giving the lead to Paul Hancock, who maintained his lead until the last lap when his chain broke and he had to pull out. joey Holder took full advantage of his opportunity and grabbed the win. Biscaglio, Bridges take PortelYllle ST • wIns By Mitch Friedman PORTERVILLE, CA, JUNE 27-28 Todd Bridges and Jim Long came away from Porterville's Spinners Airport Raceway the big winners in the AMA Western Dirt Track regionals with their respective wins in the 500cc A and B classes today. Bridges took the win in the 500cc A class from Tom Carringer and Ron Brown. In the 500cc B class, Long took the lead with jeff Gonzales in tow. On lap two, Cory Perreault took over second as Gonzales faded. jim Hestily also got by Gonzales to take over third. Long, meanwhile, had a big lead over Perreault and as the white [Jag came out Gonzales fell going imo turn. one._ The ced. .flag. came.OUl " ..... U . . . . . f ;I#_ .. 0 '" f • ............ • # .. along with the checkered and the race ended with Long beating Perreault, Hesti.ly and Richard Schroeder. Gonzales was taken to the hospital causing a half-hour delay in the racing program. Charlie jorgensen was the first rider to turn one in the 250cc B class in front of Rick Smith, Mike Gonzales and Gordy Heaurin. jorgensen and Smith were changing positions for the entire race with Smith dropping under jorgensen on the last lap in turn three to take the win. Gonzales finished third with Heaurin fourth. There were only two riders in the 250cc A class and Albert Biscaglio held oH a'charge from Bryan Berna to take the win. The Open class, meanwhile, went to Porterville's own Craig Peyron. Ely Huerta and jeH Gabhart were going at it in the O-5Occ Automatic class. Gabhart grabbed the' lead at the start, but Huerta went by down the backstraightand the two ran side-byside for the rest of the main. Huerta held orr Gabhart at the £lag to take the well-deserved win. In the60cc 7-II-year-old class, nearIy everyone jumped the startand a red £lag was brought out as they came around on the first lap. On the restart, Louie Cruz shot to the from and never looked back. Troy Cruz was in, second, but Martin Montes was pushing him hard for the second spot. With the white nag coming out, Montes made his pass in turns one and two to drop Cruz to third. At the £lag it was Louie Cruz winning by half a straightaway over Momes and Troy Cruz. In the 80cc 7-II-year-old class, the Cruz brothers went at it as the only two riders in the class. Louie again took the win OYer Troy.
