World Championship Trials Series: Round 10 Lejeune extends lead in Italy By John Dickinson SESTRIERE, ITALY, JULY 13 Steve Saunders' World Championship hopes took a dive Sunday when he could only manage sixth place in the 10th round of the 1986 World Trials series staged in Italy, while his RothmansHonda teammate and arch rival for the championship Eddy Lejeune took the victory and a convincing 17-point lead in the title stakes. A big problem in Sestriere wa~ the altitude with the start being some 6676 feet above sea level, while the highest point on the course was 77 IO feet. Consequently much rejetting was necessary and the really keen were fi tling thiner head gaskets in an effort to scrape some extra power out of their gasping engines. The three-lap, 15-section course contained many very slippery streams, which was a surprise to most who were expecting lots of grippy dry rocks. Saunders started out disastrously, and out of the first seven sections, he collected six fives. The first section saw a series of big rock steps set on a steep hillside, and John Lampkin impressed everyone with a one-dab effort that was supreme on the opening circuit. The third hazard brought screams of appreciation from the massive crowd, as Spaniard Jordi Tarres took a fantastic clean on the Italian Beta. Section six was situated on the slopes of a small dam, and the section went some 15 feet up the side of the dam wall, which was incredibly slippery, seemingly coated with graphite! Again Lampkin shone making it out of the ends cards for the first three which Tarres later emulated. The following hazard was probably the hardest of the day and definitely the most spectacular. The problem was a giant slippery rock step set in a stream. The team minders were in action, as catchers and the Aprilia crew probably got a rollicking when they managed to miss Philippe Berlatier, as he crashed hard backwards and landed in a heck of a heap. Lejeune was brilliant on .this section with a three-lap total of a oneone-three, which was easily the best and an indication of the form that the former three-time Champion has now struck. With only two rounds of the 1986 series remaining, it would appear that the Belgian is on course to regain his crown from Fantic's Thierry Michaud, who took third in Italy. • Results OVERALL: 1.
