Povall controls ModenaMX By John Spear MODENA, NY, JUNE 15 Tom Povall was in complete control of the 250cc Amateur class at the Ace MX today as he led both his qualifying heat and the final from the starting gate to the finish in both motos. A 59-rider turnout in the class made it the biggest of the day. Povall lost some of his main competition in the second moto when Jason DiDomenico, th~ other heat winner, went down in the first corner and got going half a lap behind. Second place overall went to Bob Weiss with Scott Spano (6-3) taking third. In the 125cc Expen class, Carlo Coen swept both motos after getting chased by Kun McMillen for most of each moto. In the 250cc Expen class, Coen and Mike Spear split the two wins with Spear taking the opening mota and Coen the second. Spear went down in the first corner of the second malO and trai led all 21 riders, but moved up to third by the seventh lap where he finished. Rob McCullough took third overall in both the 125 and 250cc classes. McMillen and Spear split the Open Expen wins with McMillen's win in the second malO giving him the overall. Doug Mitchell held a safe third in both matos, but the story in the second malO was the battle for fourth place. Mike Speckman, Bruce Winter, Ken Napolitano and Ray Saraceno were battling around the entire track and nobody was giving an inch. In one lap, they had 13 passes between them as they swapped places on practically every corner. It narrowed down on the sixth lap when Napolitano's bike quit briefly, dropping him out of the fray. Winter went down a lap later, dropping him back bUlthe other two continued to the final corner where Speckman's attempted pass on the outside feU a wheel length shan, giving Saraceno founh for the molOs. Speckman, though, got founh overall with a 5-5. Tom Evagash finished with a perfect I-I day to top 46, 125cc Amateurs while Pete Hogan finished 3-2 for second overall and Jason DiDomenico 4-3 for third. In the 125cc Novice, Bill Kennedy also had a perfect I-I day to outlast 45 other riders while Damien Wohlpert's 5-3 nipped Rich Strid's 4-4 for second overall. Rich Meilman and John Leithead had a pair of mota long battles in the Open Amateur class that ended with a crash that put both riders down three corners from the finish of the second molO. That .crash let Bob Weiss by for the win in that molO, but Meilman managed to get going for a second. His 2-2 day gave him the overall over Leithead's 1-3 while Wiess was third with a 5-1 and Kyle Ellefson founh with a 3-4. ASuperTrapp Street System for Only $179.95? Are We Crazy? Probably.
