Polen steals OhioRR By Larry Bell WARREN, OH, JUNE 15 Doug Polen stole the show and the money as he raced to comefrom-behind wins in A and B Production and took a third 34 place finish in theHonda Interceptor race in WERA NationaJ road racing action at Nelson Ledges Road Course. For his efforts, Polen slipped $1000 into his leathers for each class win from Suzuki and $200 from Honda. Michigan native Fritz Kling also turned in a strong showing for the weeked by taking a first in Clubman, edging Polen for second in the Inte.rceptor class, taking a third in A Production behind Polen and third in C Production Expert. In A Production Ralph Johnston J r. pulled the early lead from the start on his FZ750. Polen, coming from the fifth row, had to slip past slower traf[ic for just a lap before zeroing in on Johnston LO take the lead on the second lap. Polen, on a GSXRI 100, was turning lap times in the 1: 15 range. Polen and Johnston hooked up again in B Production. As before, Johnston pulJed the early lead with Polen and Yamaha-mounted Bob Englert right in tow. The sunny, hot track conditions which had prevailed throughout the day quickly gave out in the late afternoon and stormy weather hit producing heavy rains. With the rain starting to fall in the carousel many riders slowed - including Johnston. This allowed Polen and Englert to maintain their pace and quickly fill the one·two positions. The heavy rain slowed long enough with three laps to go letting Englert take the lead. But on the white flag lap, Polen wicked it up enough to snare the win despite the weather, traffic and an eighth-row start. The Interceptor race had Fritz Kling and Craig Gaver going at it with Kling taking the easy win after coming from the back row. Polen, also coming from the out ide of the back row had maneuvered around the backrnarkers to be within striking distance of the leaders until he was bumped from behind while going into the sweeping left· handed tum four. Thateffectively ended his charge for a shot for the overall. Mike Sturdevant chalked up an· other good weekend by winmng B Superbike, taking second in A Superbike, and third in B Production behind Polen and Englert. An endurance race was run from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. and was part of a three-race endurance series. Steel City took the lead on lap two, using the first few laps to break the bike in; about an hour into the race Steel City was into the pits with a broken valve cover bolt. A quick epoxy fix and it was back out. Later in the race it would make several more pit stops before eventually finishing second overall behind Ross Racing. Ross Racing was in and out of the pits after darkness fell due to a mal· functioning brake light. Rockwood Racing, on an FJ600, used the race as a warm·up for the 24 Hours of Nelson for riders Rich Bradshaw, Chuck Foley, Andy Deather· age and Mike Sturdevant and finished third in the endurance.
