It measured 350 (eet to the timing lights at Castle Creek hill. The rock· covered hill has two breakers that get wider each year. Thrills and spills were the order o( the day. Only the top 10 finishers in each class earn money. Bowlby says that on any given day 21 riders are capable of winning the 750cc class. The rocks did a Jot of damage to expensive equipment. Harley-Davidson XR riders Jeff Yoder and Lou Gerencer lost tire chains on their second attempts. Yoder was going so fast that the knobby tire kept on digging and he made the timer. Gerencer broke at the (irst breaker and he laid it down. Danny Halcomb brought his 750cc Triumph back down the hill with the magneto dragging. . The Yamaha riders had trouble staying on and getting off. Dick Reed had a super second run going when he was thrown into the air.
