AMA National Championship Hilkimb Series: Round Four Williams, Clark win Castle Creek By Maxine Casey HORNELL, NY, JUNE 16 Hornell M.C. hosted one of the most exciting hillclimbs of the season as new 750cc pilot Jim Clark topped his class and Greg Williams rode his STP Special Honda to victory in the 500cc class. Bowlby, on a BSA, had to settle for second with a 6.62-second ride and Yamaha-mounted Doyle Disbennett was third with a time o( 6.64 seconds. Competition has become so stiff in the 750cc class that a one-second mistake not only costs you (irst place but puts you out of the money; 0.91 seconds separated Clark's winning run and Beeze Wendt's 7.52-second ride (or 15th place. Only the top 10 finishers in each class earn money. Bowlby says that on any given day 21 riders are capable of winning the 750cc class. The rocks did a Jot of damage to expensive equipment. Harley-Davidson XR riders Jeff Yoder and Lou Gerencer lost tire chains on their second attempts. Yoder was going so fast that the knobby tire kept on digging and he made the timer.
