Ingels had the style and the line [or the win with Linn thrashing through for second over Bast, Curry and Martz. The great Scratch main show disintegrated Iffter the drawing for spots as Linn moved into the tapes just as the gate went. The tapes split and Pat shook his head in disgust as he went to the pits. Relining the racers put both Bast and Ingels in the stretch but i-t !lidn'tlast for Ingels who also busted through and despite protestations from pit crews and fans, the race was to be a match race between Sisemore and Bart Bast. Bast got the gate and set sail down the backstraight with Sisemore trying to close up, but·as he slid into the corner, he caught some traction and did a pirouette stand and was out. Bast cruised home the winner. Results SCRATCH: 1. Bert 8a.t: 2. Jim Sisemore; 3. Eddie Ingel•. HANDICAP: 1. Eddie Ingel.; 2. Pat Linn; 3. Bart B.st. . DIV II: 1. Stu McDaniuel; 2. ScOIl McNeil: 3. CA (818)883-780& (2 )538:4150 Dutchmen hosted their June short track race on a warm, humid an.d sunny afternoon. While Woods and Majeski were topping the largest Expert classes, two other riders came away with double wins. Georgie Price topped the combined 80 and l25cc classes while Joe Heberling topped the Senior class and came right back to take the 500cc Amateur final. Woods took the lead from Gingrich as the 250cc class flew down the curving backstraight while Dave Duhaine, Joe Bromley and Jim Haas trailed. Billy Bromley jumped into fourth spot on the following lap as Team Bromley staged a fairly close battle for third for the duration. The final event of the day was one of the closest, as the veteran Gingrich took the lead from the youngest of the Majeski brothers, Rob. Majeski was making his first start with the Rotax engine he had let his brother borrow for the first half to get his Junior points and also dominate the local scene. Several lengths back were Todd Kendig, Harold Hillard and Glenn Derr. Majeski took the lead as they left the fourth turn on the third lap, but for the next two laps the leader varied. By the sixth lap, Majeski had cemented his lead and his first 500cc win of the year. Heberling was first off the line as the Senior class hit the first turn with Don Johnson, Steve Smith and Wayne Franklin behind. Smith took second on the third lap while George Price moved up to join Johnson and Franklin in a close battle for third. With Heberling apparently taking it easy on this muggy afternoon, Smith closed to within one length by the checkered flag. Any hope of pacing himself in his third class of the afternoon quickly disappeared for Heberling as he took the lead at the start of the 500cc Amateur final followed very closely by Terry Swartley and Ben Machamer. Jim Chapman and Bob Barr trailed. Throughout most o[ the race the front three ran very close with Heberling taking the win by a length over Swartley. Amateur rider Chuck Wrecsics took advantage of the Experts starting on the second line in the combined 80cc Amateur/Expert final. Kevin Varnes, Mike'Sponseller and Georgie Price were close behind. Expert Price finally shot into the lead down the backstraight on the thiid lap while Varnes and Sponseller battl(d over third overall and second Amateur during most of the race. Sponseller emerged the victor in this battle. The 125s also had a combined Amateur/Expert final, but the three Experts were quickly in the top five spots right after the start. Amateur' Sponseller led Experts Price and Jim Haas out of two, but Price took the . lead by the completion of the opening lap. Sponseller held onto second until he drifted high on the second turti t~ laps later, letting Haas and the other Expert Mike Varnes past. On the sixth lap, Varnes took over second and started to whittle away Price's margin. Sponseller took over third overall beginning the final lap, but Haas pulled beside him as he got a little crossed upcomingoutoffour. Results 55: 1. Rendy Shank (Ylm); 2. Osn Leele (Yam); 3. Hallgath tops Johnson Valley desert race By Ed Weinberg JOHNSON VALLEY, CA, JUNE 15 The word in the pits was that .the course' was super fast, no rocks and very little challenge, but at the checkered flag the overall wins went to the I25cc Yarnahas of Eric Hallgath in the Novice or Better class and Scott McDonald in the Beginner class. Pre-race favorite Paul Palmer had a very short ride. Leading at the first check, Palmer broke the rear brake rod before reaching check two. Hal19ath took the point and at the completion of the first loop Palmer parked his machine, turning second over to ARA Number One plate Brian Harris. John Rudder mo.ved his I25cc Cagiva into third, followed by Huskymounted Dennis Tipton and l25cc KTM racer John Braasch Jr., who was running ninth at the first check. At the 30-mile point, Rudder took over the lead and Braasch moved into fourth. With two thirds of the race completed. Hallgath had regained the lead followed by Harris, Rudder, Tipton and Braasch. In the final 29 miles to the checkered flag, Harris faded to fifth, Rudder moved to second, Braasch to third . with Tipton fourth. The ARA is attempting to establish a vintage class field and in conjunction with this Larkin Wight of the Checkers M.e. rode a 1968 Triumph 650 for the full 63-mile race. At times Larkin was spotted a few miles off course on a dry lalc.e bed, but finish he did. Nothing so grueling is planned by the ARA with courses of only 20 miles for the vintage machines if interest can be developed. In the Beginner class Kenney Heil took the North Hollywood Honda .CR250 to the front at the start, closely followed by Burbank Yamaha racer Bob Kuerbias and Honda-mounted Juan Reyes. At the halfway mark Reyes had moved to the front, Kuerbias second and the YZI25 Yamaha of Scott McDonald had tak,en over third. In the final eight miles McDonald got around both Reyes and Kuerbias
