With spectators and pit crews taking cover under awnings and tarps from the 1000 temperatures, Kopecky did some cooking of his own, taking the holeshot and the win by a commanding margin in both the Open Modified and Open Superstreet classes. Kopecky came out of the gate first on his Kawasaki in the Open Superstreet race and shot away from the pack only to be reined in by the red nag on his third lap, after a rider had gone over the high side in turn four, leaving his bike on the track. At the restart Kopecky was undaunted, once again leaving the pack and leadiqg every lap. Ashecaught the checkered nag the second place rider, Yamahamounted Mike Wolfe, was still heded midway through turn nine. john Rosenberg came in third on a Suzuki. Rick Seaver (sponsored by Graydon Proline) of Riverside won the 750cc Modified Production race on a Suzuki, beating both Suzuki GSXR 750mounted Mike Minnigand Earl Roloff. Club champion Roloff brought his Ninja 600R to the line to do battle with the 750s. Nevertheless everyone expected Roloff, who is so fast through the turns, to win. At the start it was Minnig with the - holeshot, followed closely by Seaver and Roloff. Beginning lap three Roloff late-braked from the short straight into turn three, passing Seaver for 50 .......... . ..... second. Roloff came across the Start/ finish line in first to start the fourth lap. only to have Minnig and Seaver blast their GSXR750s past him into turn one. Roloff responded by stuffing through turn two and inserting his N~nja underneath both riders into the uphill left-hand turn three. Minnig got on the gas and carne down the front straight in first on the last lap, with Roloff in second, holding Seaver at bay. Seaver got around him in turn two only to be repassed. As the three-rider pack entered tum eight everyone expected Roloff to slide around Minnig for the win. Everyone except Seaver, who slingshot past both Rolfof and Minnig to steal the check.ered nag. Birgit Soyka (Johnson Be Wood Motorcycle Salvage) scored a spectacular win in the 250cc Modified Production (two-stroke) class over Chris Van Buskirk. Van Buskirk was first into tum one at the start. Soyka, who is no holeshot artist, left her front-row grid position amid traffic. A hard worker, she managed to carve her way into second place by the end of the first lap. Van Buskirk held a substantial lead until lhe start of the fourth lap, when Soyka began closing ata steady rate. On the white flag lap Soyka was right on Van_Buskirk's rear tire. As the duo bent left into the third turn Soyka went wide and left the track . briefly, yet she managed to wrestle the bike back on track in time to make the hard right into turn four. Van Buskirk took advantage of her error and gained a few bikelengths on Soyka. As th~ came through turn five Van BusklTk shot by a lapped rider and seemed bound for victory. Soyka never gave up and blew by the same rider, making a deep entry into turn six. Soyka then passed Van Buskirk in turn eight, only to be repassed entering turn nine. As they exited the last turn Soyka appeared to have been shot from a cannon as she flew by Van Buskirk and won by 10 bikelengths. Roddy Rodstein finished in third. All rode Yamahas. Results F-l: 1. Ramsay, L.usby score in AMP RR By John Doherty SHUBENACADIE, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA, MAY 25 Johnny Ramsay followed up two Honda Interceptor series victories at Loudon and Pocono with a win in the opening round of the Borg Warner Racing Series at Atlantic Motorsport Park on his Olands/BardahI500 Honda Interceptor. In touch, but not able to challenge, were Honda NS400-mounted Terry Eldridge and Gary MacKinnon on the Mike's Suzuki RG500. In Formula One and Superbike Peter Lusby cruised his Pro Honda/Phoe nix Racing Superbi"ke to easy victories but turfed his new VFR750 Honda on the second lap of the Heavyweight Production Expert race while being pushed hard by Ramsay in the tricky decreasing-radius downhill tum four. Midway through the tightly run 15-race schedule the skies cleared as four parachutists made a precision landing on the start line amidst 16 identical 1986.Yamaha RZ350s and a limousine load of brass hats from Yamaha Motor Canada, Benson and Hedges Tobacco, Esso and Pin;lli Tire Canada to kick off an interesting new CMA racing series: The Belvedere/Yamaha Cup 1986. Conceived by AMCRA's President, Gerard Van Heuven, ex-competitor at AMP on his 750cc MV Agusta, the series is an off-shoot of Yamaha's successful European RD Cup. The six-race series at AMP is intended as a test market for a Canada-wide series in J987. Among the 16-identicaJly equipped, Pirelli shod, Esso fueled, NGK fired, Belvedere-bedecked RZs were two riders new to the Atlantic Canada racing scene. Senior Editor Chris Knowles of Cycle Canada Magazine was defending the reputation of motojournalists while jerry Vsetecka was racing for the first time outside his Czechoslovakian homeland since emigrating to Canada as a refugee last spring. Both made good impressions. In a fast 15-lap heat Knowles led the opening laps in a smooth and assured manner hotly pursued by the runner-up in the 1985 Borg Warner Series, Stan Rich of New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada. After four laps Rich swept around Knowles on the outside of the turn 10 8O-mph righthander in front of a delighted crowd. Knowles pressed hard for the rest of the race and finished a close second. Vsetecka, meanwhile, swapped seventh and eighth position a dozen times with former TZ rider Robert Mills of Halifax who zapped him on the last lap and made it stick after drawing a back row grid position and having to work the traffic to the front. Hard-charging Alan Hirtle of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, stepped off early in the race at about 90 mph, restarted, and rattled through most of the field, setting fastest lap ofthe Tace at I: 19 to reclaim fifth place. Blaise Fougere ran his Triple E RZ to a solid third and Larry johnston's fourth looked Ii,ke he had lots in reserve and was thinking of the series winner's prestigious cup, $1000 bonus, a new set of TREEN leathers lind Yamaha-sponsored ride for 1987. Good action was evident throughout the field and this series made a big hit. Anthony Turner put in two superb Junior rides in taking the Middleweight Production and Modified Production classes on his Honda VF500 Interceptor. Rookie Donald Munroe won his first-ever road race on his 125cc Honda in Formula Three. Don's father Dave Munroe was Atlantic Canada Champ in 1967 and was there to cheer him on.
