CA 62 San Diego, CA (7141 894-9829 (&19) 284-7&17 Racers from four states converged under the lights of the F.D. Lawrence Stadium, but none were more successful than Mike Jones. The Kawasaki-mounted rider from Pennsylvania dominated . the competition as he won both the 125 and 250cc Pro classes on both days of racing to capture both championships on the Virginia MidAtlantic Championships. Friday Qualifiers were run like clockwork and after the 12Scc Pro race, Debroskisponsored Kawasaki rider Brett Salawder, from Pennsylvania, emerged as the man to beat. Suzuki-mounted Mike Andrews fought his way to second over fellow North Carolina rider Gerald Wood on a Yamaha. The 250cc Pro qualifier brought visions of what lay ahead as Jones jumped out of t~e starting gate ~ immediately put his Kawasaki into the lead. As the Pennsylvania rider cleared the track ahead, Lance Eubank and Wood (Yamaha) duked it out for second as Andrews fell outof COnteDtio into last place. With play time out of the way and money on the line, things began to look differently as the gate dropped and the 125cc Pros entered the first turn. When the normal bumping and scraping was out of the way, Jones, who limped to last in the qualifier, put his Kawasaki into top gear and ran away with the checkers. The battle for second was again between Andrews and Wood as Salawder powered through for fourth. As the 250cc Pros lined up for the main event, Jones sat poised for the win. Next to him sat Andrews an~ Wood, who were just as determined . that he would not get it. But again, as I the trio Iinished the first lap the question was not who would win, but who would take second. Jones cruised while Andrews finished runner-up. Action in the 125cc Amateur class saw riders from the hometown state finally forge to the top. In the qualifier, Casey Martin, Larry Mengel and Head Price fr~ight trained around the course as action behind them stayed close. 11'1 the main event, the lead duel was between Martin and Menze'! as Price fell off the pace to sixth while Kawasaki rider Jeff Cook kept the coals hot to move into third I at the finish. I In the 2S0cc Novice qualifier, Greg i Cropp edged to the front of the pack as Gene Greer and Bobby Wilt on a Kawasaki fought for second. With two laps remaining, Wilt fell slightly off pace while Sierra-sponsored Mike West took advantage for third. At the start of the main, Cropp took the lead I after disposing of West. Greer gOt a: mid pack start and was forced to work his way up. With two laps remain-I ing, Cropp fell and Greer took advantage to hold for the win while Cropp quickly remounted to salvage second while West settled for third. Team Green/JT/BelllDMC/Scotti Tsubaki/Sidewinder/Bel-Ray-sponsored Hank Moree made the long trip from South Carolina worthwhile as he dominated both the qualifiers and the main events in the Super Mini and Mini 12-IS year classes. Prior to racing, some in the crowd were her,. ting that no one would tackle the first set of double jumps, but the IS-yearold AMA National Champion/CRC Champion Moree hushed the crowd as he combined height and distanee to accomplish the task. North Cardlina Honda rider John Winslow was the only rider in the field that could stay close to Moree, but he had to be content with seconds in all of the qualifiers and mains. Saturday . As the evening sun set, the last qualifiers were rtin with all of the previous night main event winners coming out on top, while some of the positions behind them changed. When the 12Scc Pros hit the track, Jones was quick into the lead. The trio of Dobrowsky-sponsored Brett Salawder, Gerald Wood and Mike Andrews were only feet apart, but three seconds off the pace of Jones by the second of the seven lap event. Jones' lead increased with the laps and by the white flag he had nine seconds on the pack as they fought to the finish for second with Salawder ge.tting the nod. Jones I-I finishes for both nights brought him the class championship win. As the 250cc Pros lined up for the start, Jones, Wood and Andrews were again side-by-side. With grips over lapping and dirt flying, Jones emerged over tl}«; ~irs.t i.~l1)P ~ith_ the lead.
