~s 'Jones,if"icreasecrt{is lead·sl'i'gntly. Wood and Andrews were bashing each other for second. While Andrews held the edge for the first fOUT laps, Wood finally managed to slip by on the fifth. With one lap LOgo, Andrews seemed LO tire as Wood took second at the checkers by a five second margin. With the win, Jonescouped his second championship title and a fistful of the green stuff. For the first half of the 125cc Amateur event, Early Country Builderssponsored, Casey Martin and Larry Menzel proved LO be the crowd pleasers with the closest action of the night. Both were coming through the corners and across the jumps side-byside with Menzel hanging on by inches. But on the fourth lap going through the doubles in front of the crowd, Martin made a spectacular pass that took the wind out of Menzel's sails. From there on, Martin held th.~ lead for the class Ghampion~hip wm. Casey Cycle City-sponsored Gene Greer, Cycle IV -supported Gregg Cropp and Sierra rider Mike West sat at the choice spots for the 250cc Novice start. In only his third motocross, Greer showed that barkbusters could be removed and that woods riders could jam as he snatched the good line from two riders going through the first turn. From there on the battle was a Greer/Cropp duel as Cropp constantly pushed Greer LO make a mistake. Cropp stayed hopeful until Greer crossed the finish for his first championship win. The formation of two new classes, the 101-200cc Modified motocross class and the 20 1-Open Modified motocross class, provided for a larger turnout of racers and more exciting racing at the semi-Pro event, but the most successful of the large turnou't was Dennis Bernal. The Modified motocross class was fabricated to let motocross racers try !'heir hand at short track without the expense of buying an elaborate short track machine. All that is allowed to be done to these machines is the front end may be lowered on the fork tu bes and mandaLOry tires on the rear of a Carlisle Universal or Pirelli. In the Mini class the heat race win belonged LO Jerry Vollmer. But in the main, the race was all wrapped up by Jerry's brother, Jamie Vollmer, who took the win followed by brother Jerry Vollmer. . Bernal stole the show in the 500cc class. In the heat, Bernal started midpack and worked his way to the front for the win. In the main, Bernal again came home with the win after beating second place finisher Rex Conrad by a quarter of a lap. Due to the creation of the Modified motocross class, it was decided to have a grudge race between the first four finishers of the 500cc flat track class against the first four finishers of the Open Modified motocross class; which was a main event only with no heat race. The start of the grudge race saw Conrad pull the holeshot 6n his flat track machine with Mark Larive in LOW on a motocross machine. Bernal started in last place off the starting line on his flat tracker, but immediately began his charge to the front. At midrace Bernal moved up LO second and challenged Conrad for the lead. Bernal went past Conrad on the backstraight but went too haEd into the n umber three corner and overshot it, thus allowing Conrad to regain the lead. Bernal challenged again and this time held the lead. Conrad was getting a severe cramp in his leg and began to fade back. At the checkered flag first and second place went to flat track-mounted Bernal and Jeff Dietz, respectively, while third and fourth went to motocross-mounted Mark Larive and Mat Burge. Fifth place was donned by flat track mounted Rex Conrad. After the grudge race Bernal stated, "I thought Rex (Conrad) would get the lead and keep it. The thing (motorcycle) was really working good." g~ YOUR UNK TO POWER KNOWN and USED . Pearson peerless at Spring Creek MX By Rolfe Otterness MILLVILLE, MN, MAY 18 Rich Pearson topped the competitive 250cc Expert class at the second Spring Creek Park race this year. A win in the second moto com bined with a third gave Pearson the overall on his Honda. Mark Bolten took the win in the first moto after early leader Donny Schmit dropped back to practice his passing techniques on unsuspecting competitors. Tim Bernloehr edged Pearson at the flag LO hold second with Mike Graif fourth over Mark Plowman. Schmit shot out front in the second moto, but as he was running for no points, the ballle behind him between Pearson, Graif, and Bernloehr would decide the outcome of the race. They finished in that order with Steve Downey rounding out the top four. This was the second race this year at Perry Hendrick's popular course, which had a few changes this year. The track doubles back on itself and riders make two trips through the sand wash, giving them ample time in the whoops to effect spectacular crashes. Rider attendance totaled 293 for this even t. Brian Fern scored 2-1 moto finishes LO ace the 125cc Expert class. James Scott Jr. looked strong as he tallied a first-moLO win, but a crash left him sixth for the next round. He still took second overall with David Tait's 5-2 motos good for third. The well-known Junior Jackson rounded out the top four with his 4-3 rides. Results MINI PEE WEE: 1. Man Hills; 2.
