Wageknecht wai's
in HenryHM
By A.J. Sumner
HENRY, IL, MAY 5
In the second Pro race of the
season for the upper-Midwest,
Greg Wagenknecht, Tim Farrell and Tim Pratt repeated their
56
performances from last week's Knoxville Half Mile by once again winning their respective Expert Junior
and Pro-Am classes in Lhe Henry
Half Mile. Although the riders had to
battle rough and dusty conditions all
day, the action on the track was very
competitive.
Rookie Expert Wade Camlin led
the 25 Experts with a 27.17-second
spin around the half mile in time
trials. Wisconsin State Champion
Marty Bushman tripped the clocks
next at 27.26, followed closely by
Illinois State Champion Mike Farley
at 27.27. Wagenknecht's qualifying
time of 27.87 was eighth fastest while
Mike Ragan, who would finish second
in the final, skipped qualifying due
to a practice crash.
Recil Hart qualified fastest of the
35 Juniors by posting 28.55 lap on his
Hart Can-Am sponsored Rotax. Dallas Meyer's 28.57 was good enough
for second fastest followed by Ron
Williams' 28.59 lap on his HarleyDavidson XR750. Farrell and Jim
Faulkner both qualified at 28.77, but
Farrell's earlier run gave him fourth
(astest.
Dave Camlin, Pratt and Tom
Stroudt won the Lhree Pro-Am heats,
wiLh Camlin's being the fastest.
Hart, Bob BuHington, Bill Shoemake and Farrell won the four Junior heats, with Buffington earning
the pole (or the final.
Wagenknecht, Ragan and Farley
won the three Expert heats, with
Ragan's win the (astest.
.
John Champlain, Bushman, and
Charles Braasch earned main event
berths by virtue o( their semi(inal
performances.
The Pro-Am final was a PrattCamlin race right from the start, as
the two pulled away from the pack
and staged a 10-lap battle which Pratt
won with Camlin second over Thrune,
Van Holten and Stroudt.
In typical fashion, Farrell grabbed
the holeshot in the Juniorfinal and
was never headed to the finish. After
only four laps, Farrell had built up a
straightaway lead while Foxall, Shoemake, Hart and Hauptman fough.t
over the next four positions. In the
end, Farrell took an easy win over
Hart, Shoemake., Hauptman and Foxall.
Wagenknecht grabbed the holeshot
in the Expert (inal and never looked
back. Ragan, Durelle, Farley, Champlain and Busham fought over the
next (ive spots all the way to the finish. In the end, Wagenknecht scored
his second Expert win of the year over
Ragan, Durelle, and Farley.

O,,'ey wins IMS
Speedway war
By Scott Daloisio
SAN BERNARDI 0, CA, MAY 7
The event was billed as a war
between current number three
in the world Sam Ermolenko
and "Flyin' Mike" Faria and
each of them won an early battle, but
by the time the dust cleared Brad
Oxley had won the war in the Cycle
Rider, Inc. Scratch main at InlandMotorcycle Speedway.
Faria came into the event undefeated in Scratch main competition
at IMS in 1986 while Ermolenko,
who now rides for the Wolverhampton Wolves in the British League,
was the big IMS winner in 1985. Each
captured their respective heat races
and Errnolenko then won the semi
over John Sandona while Faria could
only muster third and was out of the
main event.
At the same time as Ermolenko was
winning his.semi, Oxley, who finished second to Faria in their heat,
scored a convincing win over Mike
Mazzacane and Ronnie Correy to
earn his ticket to the main event.
Oxley and his Coors/KNAC FM/
Cirello Racing/Hallman/Silkolenel
Simpson/Scott Goggles-sponsored
Weslake got the drop from the pole
on the start and he paced Sandona,
Mazzacane and Ermolenko into the
first bend. Ermolenko desperately
went to the outside in search of traction and couldn't find i·t. Sandona
had the unenviable task of trying to
catch Oxley but all he could do was
watch the number on Oxley's back
[or all four laps. On the last lap
Ermolenko switched to tbe inside
and was going past Mazzacane in the
final corner when they made contact
and Mazzacane hit the dirt. Ermolenko, even though he pleaded innocent, was deemed the cause of the
