THE ANATOMY OF ROAD RACING Bostard, Eaton top Sand Hill MX By Lee Denlinger BRENTWOOD, CA, MAY 4 Yamaha riders Terry Bastard, Eric Eaton and Honda-mounted Richard My then took Pro class wins today at Sand Hill. Bastard topped th.e 125s, while Eaton and My then won the 250cc and Open races. Still sporting a fiberglass cast on his right leg, Yamaha pilot Bostard (Concord Yamaha/Malcolm Smith) followed Honda rider Russ Scott out of th-e gates in the first 125cc Pro m'oLO, overtaking him on an uphill pass. As the racers came to chicken coop straightaway, Bostard, Scott, Danny Paladino, Willie Miller and Ted Stec dueled for the front slol. Bostard pulled away by five bikelengths over the uphill double jumps, closely pursued by Paladino and Miller. As the riders rounded the corner into the back section of the track on lap four, Miller cut to the inside, pushing Paladino into the third-place position. Paladino opened the throttle and recaptured second place in the next lap but couldn't reel in Bostard before the checkers. Steve Vlahos (Sierra Racing/Answer) got the holes hot in the second moto, but Bostard outdistanced Vlahos on thejumps to take the lead. On the fourth lap, Vlahos went wide to the outside and passed Bostard for a short-lived lead. Bostard quickly regrouped and put space between the two Yamahas. Bostard's I-I wins gave him first place, followed by Vlahos and Paladino. In the 250cc Pro class, Yamaha pilot Eric Eaton took a well-earned victory. In the first moLO, Honda-mounted Joey Schlag pulled the holeshot, then quickly gave up the lead LO George Hopper (DH Cycles/Malcolm Smith) but got the lead back after taking the inside line on the straightaway after the chicken coup. Hopper pressed his Suzuki forward on the jumps to overtake Schlag, then slipped back when' Schlag and Honda rider Kelly Andris (Pro Circuit/Kaiser Bros. Honda) passed him. In the fourth lap, Eaton made his move from the fourth-place position, and coming out of the backstretch, started to reel in the frontrunners. Eaton went wide' on the corner in front of the stands; cut to the inside and took the lead from Schlag_"":' a lead he ma)ntained to the finish line. In the second mota, Eaton was in better striking position, coming secnd behind Schlag out of the gates. aton and Schlag duked it out for the irst half of the race, until Eaton ulled ahead in the fifth lap and led he pack to the checkers.
