Wagenknecht wai's at Henry HM By Dave Hoenig HENR Y, IL, MAY 4 The 1986 Gordon Dusenberry Memorial Half Mile turned imo a carbon-copy of last week's Knoxville races. The Grayboy- / 28 promoted races were swept by Expert Greg Wagenknecht, Junior Tim Farrell and Pro-Am rider Tim Pratt. It took a lot of work bu t the track kept a cushion with a tight groove around the inside and it was ridable from top to bottom. Rookie Expert Wade Camlin raised a few eyebrows by setting fast time ahead of Marty Bushman. Recil Hart was the quickest Junior. Twenty-four Pro-Am riders signed in and were divided into three heats with wins going to Dave Camlin, Tom Troudt and Tim Pratt. As usual, the Junior class was the largest of the day with 34 riders on hand. Hart ran away with the first Junior heat with Mark Hilts a distant second_ Dallas Mayer led the second heat for four laps but Bob Buffington charged up from a slow start and held first the last two laps. Bill Shoemake had slow time in the third heat but coupled a strong start with great cushion riding to take the lead from Ron Williams on lap three and win comfortably. Tim Farrell easily won heat four over Greg Logue. Twenty-five Experts were put into three heats with the top three moving into the final and the rest into two semi-finals_ Mike Ragan took his Robbs Lumber/Performance Cycle/ Ragan's Yamaha/Sills CyclelT-Shirt Shoppe-sponsored Harley to an e.asy win over Del Beck's Sport City Honda- sponsored Harley. It was the fastest heat. Greg Wagenknecht ran away WIth heat two over Dave Durelle. Mike Farley also was an easy winner in heat three with Steve Labordus a distance back. The Pro-Am Final was next up with Pratt leading lap one only to lose it to a hard charging Dave Camlin, butat the halfway point Pratt put his AI Muth H-D/Fred Pettis-sponsored Harley back into the lead for good. Camlin held on to a big lead for second while Pratt's traveling buddy Gerald Thune moved past Troudt for third. Three spots were still available in the Expert final and Jon Champlin made sure he had one with a good start in the first semi and never looked back. The second semi saw Wade Camlin and B.ushman fighting over the lead while they pulled away from the field. The duel was cut short when Camlin's Harley went sour. Bushman's win was the fastest taking Charlie Braasch into the final with him. The Junior Final quickly turned into a Farrell runaway as he pulled his Illinois Harley Dealers/AI Bloom/ Dad-sponsored Wood-Rotax to a huge lead. Hart, Bill Shoemake and Bob Buffington were early pursuers. Buffington was the first to slip back while Hart had his hand full with Shoemake. Farrell was long gone while Hart got breathing room over Shoemake. Bob Foxall and Jim Hauptman dueled over fourth with Hauptman getting it on the la t lap. Ten National number came to the line for the Expert final but it was Wagenknecht on his Freeport Seamless Gutters/DiamondfEsprit/Bell/ Kegel's H-D/Uke's H-D-spon ored Harley first into turn one. He pulled a 15-bike length lead'down the back straight and the race for first was over. Ragan was cruising in econd while Farley held third over Durelle who was riding the wheels off his Rotax. On the last lap Durelle blew by but time had run out on catching Ragan or Wagenknecht. Champlin worked his way up to fifth over Bushman and Beck. Result.s PRO-AM: 1. Tim Pratt (H·D); 2. Dave Cemlin (HD); 3. Gerald Thrune (C-A). EX: 1. Grev Wagenknecht (H-D); 2. Mike Revan (H-D); 3. Dave Durelle (Rtx). JR: 1. Tim Ferrell (W-R); 2. Recil Hert (C-A); 3. Bill Shoemake (Rtx). Racing was as hot as the weather with unusual 85° heat taking its toll on the participants at the Rocky Ridge Rider's facility. The first 250cc Expert moto got off to a good start with Mark Garrison in the lead followed closel y by Bob Braund, Dave Santi, and Dave Bachman; a fall threw a~ay Northgate Honda-sponsored Garrison's early lead. Remounting in last, Garrison put on a charge that managed to bring him back to second by the final lap with JT/Kawasaki-mounted Braund winning the moto. Dave Santi was third on his Lojak Yamaha. The second race started with Garrison taking the lead after a sixth place start. An incredible inside move by Garrison in the second turn moved him into the second position right behind Braund, who had gotten the holeshot. A pass a few turns later netted Garrison the lead. But another fall by Garrison handed the lead back to Braund with Santi and Bachman second and third. Obviously [ired up over the turn of events, Garrison rode on the ragged edge in an effort to catch up. In three laps, Garrison was disputing second with Santi, neither rider giving an inch until the pair entered a right-hand tum side-by-side. Garrison, on the inside, had the better position and stuffed Santi, forcing him o[f of the track to take the position. The crowd, on its feet over the contest, watched as Garrison set out after Braund's rear fender by the final lap with the two men engaging in an intense struggle. Garrison used every trick to pass Braund' Kawasaki, but rebuffed on every attempt with an equal display of riding skill. Braund held on to take the win inches ahead of Garrison. Dan Blackham and John Bogovich continued their friendly rivalry with a fantastic first molO contest in the Senior Mini class, each aboard a Gibsonia Suzuki. Bill Bagwell led at the start on his Pro Circuit-equipped Northgate Honda un til the two Suzuki riders found a bener line through a rough section. That left Bagwell racing for third with Mike McDonald on another Gibsonia Suzuki. The leading pair maintained a steady two-tothree-second led on the battle for third with Bogovich finally able to pass Blackham on the last lap and barely hold off his good friend at the checkered for a hard-earned win. The two hardly had time to slap each other on the back when Bagwell charged across the finish alone after McDonald crashed hard trying to take third in a last-lap e[fort. The second moto saw McDonald take the win after Bogovich encountered rear wheel problems early on and Blackham also had problems late in the race. Blackham somehow managed to finish second ahead of a rapidly closing Bagwell. Results 60: 1. James Evans (Kaw); 2. Jason Cancilla (Kaw); 3. Robert Findley (Kaw). B5 JR: 1. Jason PhilliPs (Kawl; 2. Ryan whips Bay'ands MX By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, APR. 30 Accomplished National moto. crosser Ricky Ryan returned to Baylands Raceway Park for tonight's event and demolished all three 125, 250 and 500cc Pro class, winning every moto he competed in, despite many competitors in each class. Ryan used a pair of Kawasakis to win the 125 and 250cc Pro class, while borrowing a Yamaha YZ490 from Phil Gribnau for the 500cc Pro WIO. In the I25cc Pro outing, Ryan easily led from start to finish; his main concern throughout the moto was Honda-mounted BTet Cahors, who finished second. The second moto saw Cahors jam into the lead, but it was a lead that lasted for only a few turns into the race when Ryan blew by. Ryan went I-I for the overall, while Cahors finished second. While Ryan was busy winning the first 250cc Pro moto, Cahors and Tony Richards desputed second. As the race neared its end, Richards was hounding Cahors in every turn and making bids for the lead. However, Cahors wound up a lap short with Cahors holding on to second. It wasn't much surprise when Ryan again jammed into the early lead and pulled away in the second moto.Again, Richards and Cahors were feud-
