In the 200cc Expert class, the top three riders clawed and scratched in a terrific battle throughout the race. Donald Bigley and his Yamaha banled twO other Yamaha riders, Ed Thompson and Mike McCarren right down to the finish. McCarren led the first three laps before Thompson snuck by for a lap. The McCarren retaliated back into the lead and held on to It until lap seven when Big~ey ~ent for it. Bigley found the hot hne IOtO the number-one position, but this time, Bigley never gave it up and motored on for the win ahead of Thompson and McCarren. main handily and nearly picked o££ hot Chris Paulson in the Handicap main. Je££ Kniss continues to be the hotshot Division Two guy, while Ken Thiebaud survived the Division Three main. Mike Parsons led out the Handicap heats with a win, passing Greg Martz, while Billy Scott got leftat the line with ignition failure. Bart Bast came through for second in fine style on the Bast Bros Welding Weslake. Jim Sisemore won the second heat with John Houston moving through for second over Pat Linn. Team Trim' Volcano Kid Steve Martin put on quite a display in the third heat with a last-lap win over Reno H-D's Charlie Haines with Ingels saving a near high side into the fence for third .. and Paulson handily won the final heat over Joe Leduc and Duane Yarrow. Yarrow and the nooky Owen Weslake got things going in the first cratch heat coming from behind to win and take along Linn to semis. Paul Orlandi and the Quaker State pecial topped the second in a good tussle with Martin, while a pair of l8-year-olds were finest in the third heaL Bast and John Houston transferring with Ingels. The ensuing semis were trick with Classic & FashionlTrick Gas-sponsored Houston coming o££ the wide line of turn two in control, while Sisemore got the best of Yarrow and Orlandi. Ingels pulled the high wide trick in the second semi, winning in front of a hard-charging Bast and Martin and Linn having their troubles. Houston came o££ the outside in what looked like a hot line that didn't produce, with Bast and Ingels trying to get from between the sandwich with Sisemore. Ingels perservered with heavy pressure from Bast, while Sisemore couldn't hook up any better and took the third over HOllston. Jeff Kniss topped the Division Two troops with some excellent manuevering through ·the pack, taking Gary Stewart for the ride. Stewart was surprised to have made the main after a close heat race with Bill Hermanl. Derek Dorrstyn came o££ a crash sequence for third over Nick Geranio's Hayward Kawasaki special and Gary Solis took the sixth spot. Thiebaud was moved back another 10 yards after winning both heat and main of Division Three over a very quick Mike Harrington. By Scott Daloisio GARDE A. CA, MAY I Robert "Five Flavors" Pfetzin~ got up off the deck after a spectacular crash in his Scratch heat and came back to be the fifth 26 different Scratch main winner in a many week at Chris Agajanian's Ascot South Bay Stadium. Pfetzing and "Flyin'" Mike Faria gottogetherin tum twoof the brightly lit oval in the heat race incident and they made some contact. Both went down hard but Faria and his machine tumbled. After a few seconds both riders got up and were ready to go, but Faria, who had already experienced mechanical problems in his Handicap hea t, had his other machine too damaged to continue on in the crash. He was forced to hop aboard the Je££ Johnson's Weslake. By the time the four lapper was rerun and the win went to Pfelling with Faria in second. Pfetzi ng pu lied ga te four on the grid and was third out of the gate behind Alan "Crazy" Christian and Faria, but Pfetzing used the dirt on the outside to his advantage and raced around the leaders as they came o££ the second corner. Christian, seeking his second win at South Bay Stadium in 1986, pulled alongside Pfelling as they roared down the front chute to complete the first go 'round, but Pfetzing was back in the lead and they hit turn one. That was about it for the lead but Faria was hounding Christian and tried to ride around him on lap three. The move failed to work, and he dropped to the back. As the checkered nag finally dropped, it was Pfetzing scoring a comfortable win over Christian, Brad Oxley and Faria. The Handicap portion of the program was very exciting and the winner ended up being l7-year-old Gary Hicks of Glen Avon, California. Hicks was edged in his heat race by Jeff Johnson, but from then on, Hicks won both of his rides. In the main, he rocketed into the lead ahead of fellow 20-yard liners Johnson and Andy Northrup. Hicks began to open up a lead, while some of the back yardage riders began weaving their way through the traffic. Mark Dwyer was making the most progress and he started to close the gap late in the race, and as they approached the final bend, Dwyer had caught up to Hicks and was trying to push hi Weslake through on the inside, but the talented high school football letterman held his ground and took a narrow victory. Third spot went to Christian. Results SCRATCH: 1. Rob P1etting (Wes); 2. Alan Christian (Wes); 3. Brad Oxley (Wes); 4. Mike Faria (Jaw). HANDICAP: 1. Gary Hicks (Wes); 2. Mark Dwyer (Wes); 3. Hicks, Week bombs Bayland MX By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, MAY 2 Tqdd Hicks and Mike Week were the top Junior riders tonight at CMC night motocross at Baylands motocross. After moving up to the 125cc class after riding 80s, Hicks took top honors in the 125cc Juniors class, while Week capitalized on a major error by Tim Riggs in the 250cc Junior class to inherrit the victory. In the first I25cc race, Hicks lagged to a fourth-place start but quickly· made up for it by claiming the lead during the third lap of the five-lap race. From then on, Hicks totally dominated, taking the win ahead of Je££ Chalmers and his Hayward Honda-sponsored CR. Tim Riggs grabbed the holeshot in the second moto only to get passed by Hicks during the second lap. Once again Hicks motored ho~e with th~ win for the overall, whlle Suzuki rider Roger Epperson claimed second overall, via a 4-3 combination. In the 250cc Junior bout, Riggs found himself leading Week early in the race, undisturbed by Week's constant pressure. Late in the race, the two leaders settled down with Riggs taking the win over Week. Like in the previous moto, Riggs took the hole hot and led until stalling his motor and dropping to ninth. This was more than enough to give Week the easy moto win, and overall. Riggs picked o££ three riders before the checkered £lag. Mitch Cook, Kawasaki, finished second overall ahead of Jessie Guymon.
