In the first moto Os ter got the scratch followed closely by Jeff Sowards. J on Davidson . Larry Ward. Scott Steffy and the other Pros. On the - second right-hander. Davidson went down and everyone sta rted stacking up in the na rro w turn . On the second lap. Ward (Team Green ). Steffy (Malcolm Smith) a nd David Bai ley moved into secon d. third and fourth respectively. Meanwhile O ster built up a 20-yard lead on the others. For five la p s there was little change in positions. By lap eig h t. Oster had a 60-yard ad va n tage over Ward . wh o had 90 ya rds on Steffy and th e others. Bailey wa s looking very stylis h when a ll a t o nce he got his Yamaha ultra side -ways over th e big jump a nd barel y sa ved it. By now everyone was stru ng o u t a nd nothing changed . At th e checkered flag it was O ster . Ward , Steffy, Bailey, Larry Visco a nd th e o the rs. Ba iley go t the hol esh ot in th e fin al moto ahe-ad of Sowards, Davidson, John Sowards. Oren Bra y, Oster, Steffy, Ward a nd Da vid Thompson. On lap two. Oster had moved clear up to third while Ward went past Steffy. Ward moved up two more positions in th e n ext two laps and O ster went in to second behind Bailey. At the white flag Ward a n d Steffy were in th ird a n d fourth . Oster was looking super ou t front as h e too k the ch eckered flag ahead of Bailey, Ward , Steffy and the others. In th e 'first moto of th e 250cc Pro class, O ster holesh ot ahead o f Ward. Larry Visco , Tra cy Bethel and Mike Williams. On lap two Ward wa s leadi ng Vi sco. Beth el a n d Williams. O ster 's bik e blew th e transmission, wh ich put h im o u t of the rn oto . Nothing changed until lap eigh t, when Visco had a problem and he also retired. At the flag it was Ward. Williams and Beth el. In mdro two, O ster came to the line on a frien d 's Yamaha and we nt right into the lead ahe-ad of Ward. Willi ams and Bethel. For several laps Oster led Ward. who was all over him. Finally on lap fou r, Ward got by O ster and W illiams dropped o ut. Ward and O ster kept pushing each other until they had 100 yards on Bethel. O ster ran within 10 feet of Ward the rest of the rnoto. At the fin ish it was Ward, Oster and Bethel. In rnoto o ne of ihe I25cc B class I t was Troy Ba n gs on the Beaverton H onda lead ing David Bro wn in g and his H onda, R ichard Jacobs and his Co lum bia R iver H onda . Gerrish sn uc k under the three lea ders and temporarily took the lead. which they wasted no time in getting back . After all of the passing sett led down G errish was in third. Jay Vice of Country Yamaha-Kawasaki moved up a co up le of positions but at th e finish he was mi ssing from the group. T aking th e checkered in order was Bangs; Browning, J acobs, Gerrish an d th e others. In th e second and fin al rn oto th ere had to be o ne restart. After everyo ne got read y aga in it was ex- BMX star Eddie J en sen (H o nda) leading J acobs. Browning , Bangs. Gerrish and th e o the rs. J ensen looked good but a fte r two la p s Jacobs was a ble to get by. Jacobs, Jenson and Browning ran ultra close for th e rest of the race but their positions remained the same. Early leader Jack H u lse and h is KX Kawasa ki faded to fourth by the en d of the first 125cc Pro mota. Pressure by Nelson allowed a decisive pass midway through the first lap bu t it took Michael Minjares. also on Kawa saki, a nd J o n King , aboard a Honda , th ree la ps before they co u ld find the right line around H u lse. In the second 125cc moto Nelson got the holesh ot and never looked back. It was in th is moto that Jack H u lse got his revenge by gunning past Kin g in the la te laps. O n the 250cc Pro scene Matt Arena grabbed th e e-arly lead aboard h is San J ose-based R M Suzu ki but j ust as he did in the l 25cc class. Nelson powered by in the first lap . For the duration of the moto Ne lson seemed to co nce ntrate on styling off the ma ssive tab letop Bayla n ds j ump. Each lap he gave a different mid-ai r pose for the severa l camera enth us iasts on ha nd. Coming in second bu t then retiring for the eveni ng was T ony R ichard s. A flying sto ne cut h is lip deeply and he h ad to he-ad for a nearby hospital and possi ble sut ures. In the seco nd rnoto it was Nelson o u t of th e gate firs t and being chased hard by last year's Ba ylands' season c ha m p io n, Eric Mashbir riding Honda again th is year. Mashbir put his Oakland-based CR into second in th e moto and it was good for a second ove rall, much to th e pl easure of sponsor Ni ck Deffeo Racin g Prod ucts. The 10 250cc and seven 125cc Pros when adde d to th e seven Open Pro ent rants co ns titued th e largest professional ent ry for a ni ght mot ocross in recent northern California motocro ss history. In th e " Sta rs of Tomorrow " 80cc j unior class. supe r-q u ick Ken n ie McGrath emulated Jon Nelsons' double-m ota victories as he took his Castro Valley based KX Kawasaki to twin victories. His su ccess was captured on video tape and wi ll more than likely become a good trai ning a nd /or entertainment factor in the rema ining sea so n. McGraths' chief comperition in each moto was Christopher McCallie, a San Jose Yamaha sta r, who is much improved over last year. PJ I and Shine On Sh irts are McCa llie sponsors in 1986.
