J ones worked , from th e 10 all night long a n d won all three o f hi s ra ces, including th e main eve nt which h e led wire-to-wire. While J ones was in front cru is in g there was a ver y entert a in in g show going on behind him with Faria , Shawn McConnell and third-year rider R ich Sweaney. T hey ba ttled back and forth and swapped positions several times with the battle intensifyi ng ea ch lap. T hey closed on J o nes on the fina l revolution but as they came out of turn four for the la s t time it was a p paren t that th ey would be unable to ca tc h the high-flying Jones . McConnell got th e drive and shot across the line 10 take a hard-earned secon d while Faria and Sweaney briefly touched. Sweaney recovered first and ed ged Faria to the line for third in a crowd-pleasing race. Young Gary Hicks (Mi lne Bros. Weslake), whose racing career looked in jeopardy a couple of weeks ago d ue 10 an age requirement. passed Steve L yons on the final circuit to win the season opening Division Two main . H icks cooly picked his way through th e traffic and got inside L yons as they crossed under th e Sid Suttonwaved white flag. As they ca me out o f turn two, Hicks turned on th e throttle a n d sli p ped by for th e lead a n d his first win of 1986 . Ri cha rd P er kin s (3 P Racing /Custom P rinting Wesl ake) turned in a steady p erformance to come OUI on to p o f th e wild Third Division ac tion . The 250cc Pro class wa s j ust as thrill ing . Tyler motored into th e lead i n the first rn oto o n h is Yamahasu p port YZ, while Hall and Canadian Darrell Martens (R &M Motocross/Yamaha ) fill ed second and third positions. U p front , National speedsrers Ty ler a n d Hall put on a se':!sational sh o w , whil e Martens, VISCO and Munson ran third through fifth ; well behind T yler, who would go on to victory and gain valua ble points toward his Mr. Motocross quest (the title for the Pro rider with the most series points). Hall was a n o -sho w in rnoto two, wh ich made thi ngs a lot easier for Tyler, who went on to pulverize th e second co ntest over M u n son, Marten s. Vi sco and Nathan P ippert (Hon ). Martens used consistent 3-3 rides for runner-up. Salem 's John Gregson (T ay lo r Kawasaki ) won th e 125cc . C main event, but that was after taking out teammate Scott Garrison . Garrison won heat two in preliminaries and initially holeshot the eight-lap final in the same manner he bl i tzed the heat race. Garrison's holeshot set up a battle between Gregson and Shawn Colangelo for second. G regson kicked in the a fterb u rner and sett led beside Garrison as th e laps ticked away. The battle erupted with th e duo getting much too close and sen d in g Garrison d own in a h eap. wh ich put Gregson merril y o n h is way 10 victory in th e class h e has co ntrolled for th e maj orit y o f th e seaso n . Colangelo h eld o n for a second, whil e G arrison rem ounted in tim e to sa lvage a third ahead of KTM-mounted Chris C la rk and fifthpla ce fini sher Dan Gregory.
