Shekell went down twice in the second moto after bumping with other bikes. Dometrorch took over the lead on lap two and kept it to the finish. Shekell fought back from last place to finish second. Gary Moutray came in third. Mike Lenz, Phil Hess, and Fred Meyer were one, two, three in the first moto of the 2SOcc Intermediate class. With Lenz on the ground, Meyer and Hess continued their battle for the lead in the second moto. After six laps of wheel-to-wheel racing, Hess squeaked by Meyer to win. Mike Andrews (601) led Brian McNeil (25) to win moto one, but Mickev Whetzel (1) topk the 125cc A overall via 3-1 rides at Devil's Ridge. rides a 125, was proving his wonh on a 250 by pressuring York for third place. For the next three laps, all four riders were close and really putting on a show for the spectators. On the white flag lap, things got interesting since York had to pass Reavis for the overall, which he did. At the finish it was Schelenberger, York, Reavis and Abbott. In 250cc Intermediate action, the first moto holeshot belonged to Curtis Vester (Yam) followed closely by ScOtt Schambacher (M-S) and Eddie Sims (Suz). By the end of lap three, Schambacller had pas ed Vester and was way out front with Scott Freeman (Kaw) pulling into second on lap four. This left Vester and Sims battling for third. At the checkered, it was Schambacher with a 20-second lead followed by Freeman, Sims and Vester. Vester made it a two-in-a-row holeshot in the second moto. Drake Moore (Hon) was second with Schambacher third. On lap one, Moore crashed hard and remounted in last place. This left Vester, Schambacher and Keith Mundie (Kaw) b.attling for the lead. By lap three Schambacher had passed Vester and was again developing a big lead. Mundie had also passed Vester and the three stayed the same until the last lap, when djsaster struck Schambacher about 200 yards from the finish. His countershaft sprocket broke leaving him to push his bike across the line in eighth place, salvaging third overall. Meanwhile Mundie, who was involved in a first-moto pile-up, got fourth overall with a 9-1 score. Vester with a 4-2 finish got first overall. Schumachershines at MXP opener By John Keller COLUMBIA, MO, MAR. 16 With strong, consistent riding, Jeff Schumacher took overall wins in both the 125 and 250cc Expert classes during the Motocross Parents' (MXP) season opener, held at Finger Lakes Slate Park. Local speedster Bill Fosnock nabbed the holeshot in the first 12Scc Expert moto, with Schumacher and Kenny Bollmeier close behind. On the third lap, Fosnock and Bollmeier tangled in a turn, leaving Fosnock on the ground and Bollmeier in the lead. Before the lap was over, Bollmeier, under pressure from Schumacher, also went down. Schumacher continued on to win the moto, and Bollmeier remounted to take second. In the second moto, Schumacher, starting in mid pack, moved to lhe front in just two laps. Bollmeier was forced out with mechanical-problems after running second for two laps. Fosnock, running eighth after one lap, moved up to push Schumacher and finish second. A strong ride by Robert Motsinger gave him third overall. The first 2SOcc Expert moto saw john Lambert and Bollmeier hook up for a wire· to-wire race, with Boll· meier finally passing Lambert for the win on the last lap. Schumacher overcame an eighth-place start to finish third. In the second moto, holeshot artist jeff Rowe took the lead and held it until the sjxth lap, when Schumacher, starting fifth, slipped by then held on to win his third moto of the day. Rowe finished second and Bollmeier worked his way to third. Chase Greening led both motos from start to finish LO capture the SOcc Beginner title. The SOcc Senior class was treated to a rider's clinic by jeff Emig. Emig lowsided on the second lap of the first moto, allowing Ben Heibel to take over the lead, but Emig remounted and in one lap reclaimed the front spot for an easy victory. Heibel finished second. Fogle, Childress top Devil's Ridge By Henry Muller SANFORD, N.C., MAR. 9 Barr's Competition/Fogle Electric's Carl Fogle sailed to a I-I score for the Junior Mini class win, while West Virginia's Stevie Childress took control of the Senior Mini division at Devil 's Ridge MX. Yamaha/Suzuki of Columbia's Fogle flew his Yamaha to the first Junior Mini moto win over jeff Hens· ley with Brad McKee third. McKee filed lhrough the tacky red clay first turn to lead Fogle and Hensley with Canada's Bob Bulyovsky mounted in fourth. McKee matched Fogle's pace for the first few laps before Fogle pulled along side and then motored away. McKee locked up second overall over Hensley with Bulyovsky a sure fourth. Stevie Childress wa in command of both Senior Mini motos and Stacey Barnett a strong econd in moto one over Patrick late. late's 3-2 finish topped Barnett's 2-6 tally for second overall, while Canadian Steve Bulyovsky logged a S·3 fourth overall. KSIIScott/Yamaha of Fayetteville's Todd Adams was on form with a four-moLO sweep of tlle 125cc Band 250cc B cia ses as Chris Brewer survived a spill to score second overall in the 12Ss over Brad Proctor. Mike Arrington and Tim julian diced hard for the runner-up spot behind Adams in the first 2S0cc B moto with julian getting the nod over Arrington and jimmy Crumpler. Adams left jimmie johnson and Crumpler to duel for second in moto two with Crumpler pushing ahead at the finish for second overall. The Open Amateur and Senjor class were run together but scored separately with Steve jarjabka throltling LO the first moto lead with Mike ~ Barnett and Clay Thomas in arreais~, Barnett moved ahead for the lead and the Senior class win. jarjabka was first Open Amateur over Dan Gregory and Auman Parrish. With a second-place finish in moto one, Clay Thomas had the Senior class wrapped up as he took the lead in moto two. Thomas' lead ended when his chain derailed. "I knew it was worn out but I was hopin' it would make it through the day." Barnett picked up the win over Sam Lewis. Barnett swept the Open Amateurs with Gregory a safe econd over Parrish. Barr's/Coliseum Cycle's Mike Andrews ran away with the first 125cc motoover Brian M eil with Mickey Whetzel stealing third from Larry Andrews. Mike Andrews was in control of moLO two when he DNF with Whetzel taking the win and the overall followed by McNeill and Larry Andrews. Vann Gibson led the first half of moto one in the 250cc A class until Jeff Bowling bumped Gibson to second. "I thought I had it won until Bowling snuck up on me," said Gibson. Bowling had a five-second cushion at the finish over Gibson with Brian McNeill topping David McGuyrt for third. Mike Andrews rallied back from a DNF in the first leg to win the second moto over McNeill and Gibson. Mceill's 3-2 score awarded him the overall ahead of Gibson and Bowling. Results 125 PRO; 1. '- Pasqualoffo pounds Vegas MX By Dick Goodwin LAS VEGAS, NV, MAR. 9 Desert ace An thony Pasqual 0 tto outlasted a determined Richard Wilk to take the Open Pro title at the Las Vegas Motocross Park toclay. Pasqualotto, a former Frontier 500 winner, finished behind the Sportsman Cycle-sponsored Wilk in the first race, but then kicked out the stops and streaked to the secondmotowin bya wide margin to sew up the overall. Dan Wagner, racing in his very first Pro race, blasted LO the front of the combined 2S0/Soocc race in moLO one. Thatdidn'tlastloo long however, ever, as the more experien ed Pros started picking him off one by one. By the third lap, Wilk had taken command of the Open class while Barry Hill and Pasqualotlo were trying to run down. Hill endoed hard on the whoop section and Wilk went on to win the race ahead of Pasqualotto. Wilk started off strong by holeshotting moto two ahead of Wagner. Pasqualotto (Las Vegas Suzuki) came up to challenge and when Wilk encountered trouble late in the race, he was in the perfect position to pass for the win and the overall. Wilk salvaged second overall with Wagner third and Hill fourth.
