Pico Blvd.• Los Angeles. CA afternoon mishap which disabled the water truck and made track conditions Sunday dry and dusty, to say the least. Billy Carlson (Hon) holeshot moto one of the Expert race, run concurrently with the 125cc Amateurs, and started to pull away from Steve Brooks (Yam) and J.D. Crawford, until his CR suddenly stopped running. Davis got a bad start but soon worked his way into second behind Brooks. Davis looked for some daylight around Brooks, but Steve held it on for the , win ahead of Davis and Eric Kirk (Hus). Brooks got the win in 125cc Amateur, while Davis collected the Expert victory. Kirk was second in the ExpertcIass, with second in 125cc Amateur going to Deano Cowan (Hon). Moto two saw Carlson grab another holeshot, but Davis put him back to second place on lap twO, with Cowan firmly in third. That order stood until the checkered flew, with Cowan getting first overall in 125cc Amateur with his 2-2 finish. Toby Holden (Kaw) dominated the SOcc Amateur class with runaway wins in both the SOcc Modified and SOcc Stock divisions. Holden holeshot all four motos and never looked back. Flyin' Brian Cook also took double wins on his Kawasaki of Phoenix! Young Cycle/PJ-I sponsored KX in SOcc Novice and in the Junior Cycle class. David Pingree held off Cook for five laps during the first SOcc moto, but Cook finally got around to finish first at the checkered flag. The second moto was practically a replay of the first, except Brian Klimuck beat Derek Giest for third. The action was fast and furious in the 125cc Beginner class as Kenny Fraser (Yam) holeshot the first moto but ran off the track, handing the lead to Todd Koehnke (Kaw) with John Christley (Kaw) in second ahead of Sunnyslope Honda rider Eric Metcalf. Metcalf and Christley had an exciting dice going until the last lap, when Metcalf slipped past Christley for second. During moto twO, Scott Barlow (Kaw) grabbed the lead ahead of Christley and Koehnke. Barlow started to open up some distance between himself and Christley and went on to win. Koehnke's 1-3 finish netted him the overall, with Christley getting second overall. In the 250cc Amateur Face, Honda West rider Mike McMullen made it look easy by sprinting to a perfect I-I finish ahead of second-overall finisher Greg Crouse (Suz). Results JR CVC: 1. LACR hosts CRC Diamond Head GP By Hal Sanguinetti PALMDALE, CA, FEB. 23 Nearly 300 riders turned out for the inaugural running of the California Racing Club's (CRC) Diamond Head Grand Prix at LA County Raceway. Jack Barbacovi and the CRClLACR crew spent many hours modifying and adding to the motocross track, and ended up with a somewhat short (for a Grand Prix) but otherwise excellent race track that nearly all the riders agreed was a lot of fun. The day was capped by the traditional Team Race which, as expected, was dominated by a couple of Open Pro bikes. The riders were required to switch every lap, and the race ran a full hour, which necessitated pit stops for most entries. The win went to Brian Chereshkoff and Alan Anderson, who entered only the team race. This probably helped them, as the second-place finishers, John Hemme and Bill Fullmer had already competed in the Pro moLO earlier. Hemme, who was making his first race appearance in five months was doubtful if he W041d be able to finish the Pro moto, let alone the Team Race. As it turned out, Hemme and his partner, enduro rider Fullmer hung in there for second in \., I • 1'1, I' the IS rider field. Third place was somewhat of an upset, as CRC regulars Jason Davenport and Brock Suter, who has only recently moved up from the Min i class, ran very strong and finished third overall and first in class, although both are 125cc Novice riders. Fourth was also a pair of Novices, this time 5OOs: Todd Broussard and Rich Barton. First Intermediates were Jack Parker and Rick Perez on a 250. Ron Schaffer and Guy Cortner picked up the Beginner trophy; Ronnie Densford and Joel Tokarsky won the Minis, and Bruce Armstrong ran the race solo to capture the Ironman crown. In the Individual events, Minis started the day, and the race belonged to Expert Mike Pascarella on his R&D Suzuki. Pascarella has just returned from an injury and was using this race to get in some much-needed riding. It sure didn't look like he needed the practice, however, as he bliued the field after taking the lead on about the third lap after starting in the last wave of riders, about a half a lap down. The two Intermediates, Ronnie Densford and Joel Tokarsky traded the class lead back and 'forth when they stopped for gas. Densford ended up with the win after 45 minutes. First Novice was Gary Brinkmeyer in fourth overall, with Ryan McAlister and Bobby Morales placing first and second Beginner in fifth and sixth overall. The 60cc Expert win went to another Bobby Morales who edged 60cc Intermediate winne'r Shane Morales in eight and ninth overall, respectively. The Pro and Intermediate race was a real challenge to keep track of, what with three money classes and the always tough Intermediates to watch. Brad McLeod finally got the 500cc Pro and the overall win, after early leader Fullmer never came around about a third of the way through. Second 500cc was Randy J ohmon. Hemme worked his way to third overall and first 250cc Pro, with Doug Gentry the lone 125cc Pro in fourth. Jeff Black was first 250cc Intermediate, two overall places ahead of 500cc Intermediate winner Russell Garcia. Troy Welty scored the 125cc Intermediate class win over Scott Murphy. The 500cc dominated the Novice class, with the first four finishes on the big bikes. Curt ,James took the win, followed by John Adams and Broussard. In fifth overall, Mark Matteson finished well ahead of Phil Wurster and Ken Neiuel in winning the 250cc Novice, and Suter took his second trophy of the day winning the I25cc Novice, with Barton and Mini rider Densford taking second and third. Vets had a large turnout, with Ken McAllister taking the gold for the MX Vet Experts, with former AME number one Pro Andy Janningscoming from back in the pack for a second. Stuart Douglas finished first 30+ Amateur over John Burkey, first 30+ Expert; Tracy Geiger finished seven th overalI and first MX Vet Intermediate. Al Stinebaugh was first 40+ Expert, and Joe Whitley won the largest Vet class, Over 30 Novice. Results MINI BEG: 1. Ryan McAlister; 2. Bobby Morales; 3. Mike Lackey. MINI NOV: 1. Gary Brinkmeyer; 2.
