Joe Broussard. ------------------------------------------------~ Ka "t BUNNELL, FL, MAR, 2 start at Florida Sportsman MX, with Canadian Harold Davis challenging local Don Horsley and series point leader Mike Houston in teh hOlly contested 250cc Amateur race, Horsley came back to win the second moto and the overall after taking the runner-up spot in the first moto behind Davis, Honda-mounted Davis started off the 250cc Amateur action with' the holeshot ahead of Horsley (Hon) and Houston, on a green machine out of Americus, GA, Davis and Horsley wer busy battling for the lead while Houston had his hands full with D,L. Mays (Han), dicing it out for third, Kawasaki rider Keith Work, fifth place in the series, now was in fifth place and biding his time to make his move, By lap two Davis pulled away from Horsley while Clay Phares, currently third in points, had made a smooth line around Work to take over fifth, All of a sudden, Mays ,was out of the picture as he pulled over to the sidelines watching before finally leaving the u'a k for a DNF. Phares moved up to fourth and Richard Lanake from Minnesota on a Honda, claimed fifth. At the checkered in order it was Davis, Horsley, Houston, Phares, and Lanake. Horsley had the holeshotthe second time out, this time with Davis in pursuit. Keith Lemke followed in third and Houston and Phares were fourth and fifth. Horsley's glory was interrupted when Davis took charge again, Mays was running sixth but again DNF, while Fortson Rumble challenged Lemke for fifth. The battle for the lead was fierce, with Horsley and Davis swapping first and second again, Horsley was riding and jumping hard as he g-ave his last ditch effort to hold on to the lead this time. Houston dropped back to fifth when Phares got by Houston for third and Lemke followed suit. Time ran out with Horsley in first followed by Davis, Phares, Lemke and Houston. In Senior class action, pulling the holeshot was series point leader Ernie Millan (Ernie's Cycle/BurmahCastrollTDR Reeds) followed closely by Yamaha rider Donald Leddy from Ft. Myers, second in Senior points, Robert Godfrey (Yam) and Mays, By lap two Leddy had put Millan behind him. Dave Curry on a Yamaha from Shaginaw, Michigan, was in fifth, and the top fi ve were in a su per close, single-file line as they came around the scorers' tower the second lap. MilIan went down lap five, and it was a bad mistake as Mays and Curry both passed Millan as he recovered.
