The start/finish was loca ted in the Cougar BUlle area, with the firs t loop heading north east of Wilson Hills, wi ndi ng th rough the mountai ns a ll the way over to Bessem er Mine, turning west to the border of the competition rid ing a rea th en south to Anderson Dry Lake and the first- loop finish. This 44-mile loo p for easy for ATVs and Beg in ners a nd was ea ten up by Smi th in 55 minutes. T he 65-mi le second loo p went due east with twisty hills and fa st desert, a downhi ll onto Soggy Dry Lake and then into a duel gas ch eck at th e 12mi le point. T he next portion included fast desert into the ro ller coasters and some techn ica l ridi ng with sandslid in g and very rocky terrain. Into Victor's Pass for the gas ch eck at the 42-m ile point, th en on to th e fin al 14-mil e stretch to the finish . Smith co m p leted this cha llen ging loop in one h o ur, 35 minutes for the Open Expert and ove rall win, with Huskymounted Dan Ashcroft following closely for second overa ll and Open Expert. In third ove rall was Paul Kra use on a 250 Suzuki. The track promoters are sponsoring a major point fund for these dirt track races. Points will be distributed on the same basis as the Camel Pro Series. Ten riders will share in the point fund.
