Croz ier said, " I' m not back 100%, bu t I'm wo rk in g on it, I train dail y, gelling ' ready for Na tio na ls th at stan next wee k."Crozier wasn 't ex pec ted to be back on the race circuit till early Ma rch, but doctors feel h e ca n ha ndle it, H e loo ked 150% as he wo n 125cc a nd 250cc Ex pert and took home th e gold in the Open Money class . Cro zier easily cleared th e da redevi l doubl e jumps mos t Expert riders wou ldn 't even try. The Amateur riders bravi ng the wet, co ld morni ng were doi ng a good job thernsel ves as raci ng progressed , T he Mini Novice class saw weather co ndi tions improvi ng wit h d rier wea the r, bu t temperatures dropping set the p ace for most of the moLOS. J ohn Gentilcore, out of Gai nesville. Florida , led th e first rnoto on h is Kawa saki , being hustled by Mike Work, out of J acksonvill e, Florida a lso o n a green machine. H olding in th ird was Jason Norris fro m Evans, G eorgia a n d fourth place saw Bria n Poggie, another Florid a rider on yet another Kawasaki. Kawasak i seemed LO be th e dominating factor in this class. Work p u t in a serio us bid for the lead and came o u t on top the seco nd lap, putting Gentilcore in second , Work p ut a respectful dis tance bet ween him and second and went on to wi n , Gemilcore still second, Norris th ird , and Poggie fourth . In th e second rno to, Work, feeling confident, took immedia te cha rge as he decided to double h is fun, with Gemilcore second , Peggi e th ird , and th e only lady rider, Patty Mill a n, on th e o n ly Honda , fourth. As th e race ended it was sti ll Work, Ge n rilco re, No rri s p assed Mi llan and Poggie for thi rd a nd Millan fin ished fourth. T he I25cc Amateu r class proved to be a favorit e, the largest and most exci ting of th e day. It was a surprise to everyone when Larry Perr y j u mped LO th e lead o n his Ka wasak i. Perry, fro m Lake City, Florida , just gave up his mi ni bike to ride in the big bike - class , not even sure of h is decision. With ela ted parent s loo king on , Perry blitzed the rest of the field o f rnoto crossers. Ya maha rid er Stan ley Co le was out LO tak e first away fro m Perry and h e drafted in the seco nd spot. O n a Honda in th ird was Mark Rackley, and Mike Co leman, on a H usky, was in fourt h . The th ree Georgia boys were p uttin g pressur e on the Florida leader as th e Am at eu r class covered th e clay su rface looki ng for every edge to mak e th eir move. Co lema n fou nd h is cha nce o n lap two a n d docked Rackl ey down a n ot ch , Co lema n con tin ued to ha ve some problems as Tracey Lee, fro m Talla hassee, Florida , on a Yama ha , a lso di splaced him. Lee's g lory was very short-Jived: by th e next lap h e was down to nimh' a nd n ow pl a yin g the tough ga me o f ca tch -u p . Rackley wa s _ once again in th e top four. Perry co n ti n ued to ho ld noth in g back as he romped th e Georgi a soi l. Co le, keeping Perr y in sig h t, was in purs u it, Coleman th ird, bu t n ow Brad J imison 's Yama ha , out of Atla nta , ro u nd ed o ut the LOp four. Wi th th e las t lap endi ng, positions held . The last rno to was once agai n Perr y and Co le dueling, Co leman an d Rackley third and fo urth . On the third lap, Rackley was agai n dis p laced by J im ison. H alfway through th e race Col em an and J im ison bo th got around Col e as h e a ppeared tired out. Cole, suffering from th e flu , rode well, despite being sick. O verall gold wen t LO Perr y, a j u bi la n t yo u ng m an, seco nd LO Colem an , thi rd Co le and fourth J imison. Rackley fini shed fifth despite his up-and-down da y. ' J ackets and troph ies were awa rded LO class wi n ners, with ru n ners-u p eac h receivin g trophies, Nabinger ca me o u t o n top o f th e 125cc class a fter a seaso n- lo ng duel wit h Eri c Wickizer, who was awarded th e secondp lace trophy. Nabinger 's cha m pionship in th e 500cc class was wo n over Jerry O 'Brien an d Boots Oakley. Wickizer fared better in th e 250cc competi tion, grabbi ng to p honors over Christy Scheffer. J oel Nabinger was given the h ighest co mpeti tion award - T rac k Cha m p io n. J oel was also firs t Senior Mini. First year Pro Crai g Estelle h eaded the Expert class, a nd th e Mud and Sn ow title went to Randy Gardner. Bev a nd Bill Roe no tch ed top h onors for Road Rid er and Passen ger , wh ile Charley Chapman was named top En duro rider. T he Speedway award was presented LO Tuff McBride, with Mik e Buman th e runner-up. Stephen Eck top ped the Junior Mini di vision, Past pres ident Boots Oakley presented a special clock p laq ue to Lee Thomas for h is co n ti n ued dedi ca tion to th e Sq uare Dea l. The Family Award was given LO Ira , Lil a nd Junior Waterman for th eir su p port to th e club as a famil y. T h e cere mony wa s co n cl uded wi th th e m ost pr estigi ous club award, th e Presiden t' s Awa rd , bein g given to Denn is T oespern for the hundreds of hours of work devot ed LO making 1985 a successful seaso n for th e Square .
