Farrell frosts loon lake Pros By Linda Blum ANTIOCH , IL, JAN . 26 Illinois Harley-D avidsonsponsored Tim Farrell us ed a Woods/Rotax to keep the Pro class win out of reach from his ne a rl y invincible ad vers a ry , Vern Browne, and captured round four of th e Loon Lake Ice Racing Ser ies. "T h is is Tim's kind of track , T im 's kind of day," said Farrell's dad . The ice was fast, the wind a nd temperature were set a t a rctic blast, as the outstanding high -lin e speci alist proved his dad 's predictions. Farrell to ok the immediat e lead, th en produced a very effective ride to outdist ance th e efforts of Browne, Mark a nd Ri ck Gruber, Mike Drdl a a nd Max Lagod for th e Pro class sweep . The victory marked th e end o f a threeweek win streak by Browne. I I. I I ••• " 1 II I ~ll·. II In an upset of a smaller version. Yamaha-mounted lC. Blum turned in his best performance to top current District 16 as well as series points leader Karter Busse in the 60cc division. Blum's victory was Busse 's first series defeat. Also collecting his first seri es win , Yamaha-mounted Brad Flament put in a determined ride over ea rly leader Kye Ybema and heat winner Mich ael Gibson for th e Pee Wee victory. Suzuki-mounted Brian Kromroy topped a tight battle over Lee Eppler with a h eat and fin al sweep to co llect hi s seco nd co nsecu tive 80cc clas s win. Steve Swatsch eno, Chad Bierl e and Jim Bullock traded th e lead position in th e co m bined I 25/250cc fin al while Bultaco-mounted Todd White worked hi s way through congestion, whittling his fifth-place start down to co ntention 10 gra b the win on th e last lap. Yamaha-mounted La rry Piekos, a n ar ctic blast of another kind , clearly dom in ated th e Open and Senior cla sses. Th e only double class winner, Piekos ' closest competition came from By Daryl Drake Chappy Blose led a Honda sweep of th e top three positions at the Arizona Desert Racing Association 's 12th Annual Tussing Mem orial Gila Bend Grand Prix . T h is race honors Darryll Tussing, a long-tim e ADRA supporter instrume nta l in getting the early editions underway who lost his life in an airplane accid ent. Somewhat reminiscent of the old Elsinore, Cal ifornia races, th e Gila Bend G P sta rts and finish es on th e cit y's Main Street. with the pits lining each side for abo u t a mile. An esti mated 5000 people atten ded the event. A total of 437 entries started at this year's run over th e supe r-fa st 35-milelon g loop; 284 were motorcycles. Starting five abreast, 30 seco nds apart, Gary Dircks (Hon ) led Chappy Blose, Garth Sweetland (Hus), Pa t Duncan (Hus) and Ryan Armitage (KT M) into the desert. At 41:30 Dircks was back into the home check. O ne minute behind was Duncan. Then came ex-jumper Gary Wells on a Honda. Since he 'd started well back in th e Experts, his position put him in the lead on time. (This was Well's first ride in four months. having just returned from Australia a few weeks ago where a documentary was taped on the yo u ng daredevil. ) Blose was next aft er pitting before the check. Dircks led on the trail, and as Wells was closing in on the second lap he nailed a tree, endin g his day. Other notable rid ers were among th e non-finishers. Garth Sweetland (H u s) , winner a t last year' s GBGP. and Carl os Serrano (H us) were all sm iles before th e ra ce. basking in th eir 2-3 fin ishes at Whiskey Pete's. But Sweetland lost hi s en gine in the first long sandwash aft er catchi ng up to Dircks' rear fender, and Serrano suffered numerous troubles including the loss of two gears, so he towed in Sweetland on the second lap. Meanwhile, Dircks, who had set a motocross pa ce for the race. began tiring and slid out, falling near the end of lap two.
