As th e pack so rted o u t a fter turn on e, 125-mounted Hi ck s (Sco tti IOO%/ jT/ Yam ) wa s in a very tigh t seco nd. By lap two, Wa geman had a su bsta nt ia l lead a nd looked lik e a su re wi n ne r if he d idn 't slip. But in lap four, Wagem a n went down long enoug h to let Hick s zip pas t. H icks h eld th e lead to th e checkers, with Wa geman seco nd a nd a no ther 125 rider, Pa t H axton, th ird . Wagem a n agai n took th e lea d a t th e start of rnoto two and agai n Hicks was righ t o n hi s back . T he battle raged for 15 minu tes without p ause. H icks was n ever more th an three seco nds beh ind Wagem an . At the beg inni ng o f lap 10, Wa geman oversho t a turn a nd went very wide. Hicks tr ied to cu t inside bu t Wagcman reco vered , an d th ey sta r ted th e last lap o nly th ree bikelen gths a pa rt. Wageman managed 10 hold o n for th e m ot o win a nd th e overa ll , with H ick s ge tti ng seco nd a nd H axton a no the r th ird fo r third o verall . Wageman a nd Hi ck s were back for the 250cc P ro ra ce 10 m eet Ken Zah rt a nd steady j oe H opkins. In rnoto o ne , Zahrt got th e d rop o n H icks a nd led o ff th e line. Hick s was right on Zah rt, a nd it wa s a spe ctac u la r co n tra st in styles. Zahrt liked th e tight inside line a nd H ick s th e high and o u tside. The co ntest went on for four laps , until H ick s pull ed off wi th a seizu re. Zah rt was co nvi nced he had it ea sy with n o o ne close. Wageman was 10 seco nds back in th e number-tw o spot. Zahrt took it a little too ea sv a n d waited behind so me lapped riders for a better p assing spot, a nd sudden ly Wageman was o n him a nd took the lea d a t th e sta rt o f th e la st lap with a hi gh j um p a nd banzai pa ss in some reall y deep whoops. Zahrt could not retake the lead and Wagem an got th e moto one win , with Hopkins following Zahrt for third. Hicks didn 't show for moto two, and when Zahrtgotthe ho leshot again, it was Wageman in his back pocket. Wageman had read Zahrr 's styl e whi le he a nd Hicks wer e battling in rnoto o ne , and pushed Zahrt so tight in a turn he had no room to go. Wageman took the lead in lap three and motored o n for the win a nd th e overall. In the lat e part of th e race Zahrt stumbled a bit going over a tabletop jump and Hopkins was right there to pick up seco nd . That fini sh gave Hopkins a second overall a nd Zahrt third.
