(l,) ..0 S By M oto -Depo (l,) STEAD, NV, N OV. 3 u T he n o rmal series turnout in Nevada was highligh ted by th e a p pearance of Trans-Cal Series ace Allen Berl u ti , mou nted o n an Allen Bray-spo nso red M-Star. T he O pen a nd 250cc P ro s ro de in a co m bi ned race with a staggered start. Before the start, Berluti , riding an Open class bike, an nounced , "My goal is to pass all th e 250s and gain half a la p o n the field ." Current series points leader Jeff Clout ier, o n a 250 Suzu ki from Mich aels Cycle in Carson City, Nevada, had othe r p la ns. Clo utier timed th e start j ust righ t in th e first mo to a nd was moving away from th e res t o f th e field a t a fast p ace. Berluti LOok a n im media te lead in th e O pen class, passi ng most of the field befo re the fi n ish of th e fourth lap. It was beginning to look like h e would have no problem livin g u p LO his goa!. H e co ntin ued to m ove u p u ntil h e was in fourth overa ll with onl y Hus ky-mou nted Wh ite's Cyclesponsored Butch Still mock, Ri ck Woodson a nd Cloutier in front. At th is poi n t Berlu ti had hi s work cut ou t for him . Stillmock and Woodson were di cing for second and Berl uti cou ldn 't find a way around. At th e ha lfw ay poi m, Woodson dropped off th e pace a nd Sti ll mock too k co ntro l of second. A lap lat er Ber luti passed both riders and set h is sigh ts on Cloutier. He t~ie.d to reel in Cloutier . but at the finish of th e moto, C lo utier was in fi rst with a big lead , Ber luti finishing second overa ll, first Open class , with Ho nda rider Beau H ibdo n second Open . D ur ing the second m oto th e Opens were started first, followed by the 250s. Now it was Ber luti 's turn to sta y a h ead of C lo utier. Both riders were in fron t of th eir respective classes, and by m idrace, Clo utier was about 30 seco nds behind Berluti, Everyo ne felt th is wo uld be th e order of finish, but on th e n ext lap , Clou tier cam e arou nd in firs t, followed by Hi bdon . Ber luti had la id it down o n th e back part of the co urse an d dropped back to third. Berlu ti was p ushing ha rd to recapture the lead wh en he lost it off a jump , in juring h is elbo w a nd dro p pin g o u t, leav ing Clo utier with a well -deserved overall win. In 125cc P ro action, Mark Nason (Carson City Kawasa ki), got the hol eshot wi th Rick DeCa rl o (Mic haels Cycl e) right beh in d . At the midway poi nt, DeCarl o dropped h is bi ke and H onda- m o un ted David McCom bs moved into seco nd. T he ac tion got furious in th e nex t-to-la st lap . Nason bobbled, and McCombs gOI by for the lead. Nason, refus ing to settle for seco nd , LOok the lead back. McCombs tried to get around, but had to settle for second behind Nason. In th e second moto , Nason aga in got th e holeshot, followed by DeCarlo an d McCombs. By th e end of th e moto, DeCarlo hd faded int o third, p u tting McCom bs in second. So , t.hc fi nish was the same as moto one, wah Na son first a nd McCom bs second. (l,) Cl J ef f C lo utier (a b ove) won the c ham pionship w hile A ll en Be rluti (bel ow) took second overall .
