In rnoto one, Molder and Pat Wo mack came into the first turn first, bu t Mo lder emerged with the lead. Hyde quickly slipped past Molder in the opening lap , while Stork rai led into third. The top trio ran away from the pack for the rest of th e moto, with Hyde holding the advantage for the first half of the moto. Then , Molder took off with the lead, lea ving Hyde 10 battle Stork. Hyde held Stork off for three laps, th en , coming onto the downhill , slipped underneath Molder to regain the lead. At the bottom of the downhill, Stork tried to jump past Molder a lso, but crashed . Molder th en tangled in th e next turn and pulled his header a way from th e exha us t manifold a nd h ad to nurse th e sick bike to th e wire. At th e che ckers, H yde cruised in for th e win. Round two saw H yde aga in tak e th e holeshot with Mo lder and Stork in tow . Th e leaders again ran off an d h id from th e field, and diced a mo ng th em selves for th e moto a nd overall win. Molder slip ped by H yde on the seco n d lap, th en Stork pulled around both Hyde and Molder th e foll owing circu it, and tried 10 pu ll out a lead. Mo lder stayed right with Stork for the duration of the m oto , and in the final la ps, powered past Stork. Stork tried o nce more 10 regain the lead, but Molder ca p tu red the moto, overall , and number-one p late for th e 250cc Pro cla ss. Stork's second ga ve h im th e sixth-overa ll slo t, while H yde, wh o went face-first off a doubl e into th e ground, fought back past Womack for third o n th e fin al lap, an d took seco n d o vera ll for th e da y a nd th e season. Womack took fourth in th e m o to for third overa ll. In the O pen ac tion, Molder on ly had p rid e o n th e line as he went into th e race wi th th e number-one pl at e in h is pocke t. Barton, Hall, Lyngar claim Idaho MX Championships By Marty Gregory BOISE, 10, SE PT. 29 Corey Barton, Mark Hall and Jim Lyngar took P ro class champio ns hi ps at the fin a l ro undof the Idaho State Motocross Championships held at the Owyh ee Motorcycle Club's (O MC) famed outdoor motocross track. Barton took the I25cc Pro title, Hall aced the 250<:c class and Lyngar was the O pen class champion. "Corey just do esn 't shut off!" was a preva lent comment d uring the firs t 125cc O pen mo to . Bart on , aboard th e J ack O berb illig KX I25, started some 30 seco nds behind the Open Pros and passed th e ent ire pa ck in rhe co u rse o f a 20-minute race. Early leader H all , on a borrowed YZ490, was starting to pu ll it out on Jim L yngar (Yam) and Larry "Action " Jackson until hi s motor began making horrib le noises going up the approach to Club House Jump. Pushing over th e top, Hall had to giv e it up as Lyngar strea ked by for the lead and th e event ua l win. J ackson pretzeled th e rea r sectio n o f h is KX500 w ith a n un sch edu led loop over th e fifth-gear jump a t th e end o f th e sa n dwash. Jackson walked back to th e pits. leavin g L yngar to an easy Open win , th ough h e wa s pa ssed by the flying Ba rton on h is 125. Th e 250cc Pro cl ass pr om ised to be more hotly contested as Lyngar, on a Husqvarna for thi s o ne, gra bbed th e hol eshot in moto one a nd h eld off H all for the first lap. In the Formul a One race, Stern started fro m the back of th e pack bu t shot to the lead when a ri der pulled a massive wheelie o n the fro nt row . Kawasaki-moun ted Kenny Ko pecky also go t away quick, and by the seco nd lap, h ad ove rtake n Stern for the lead . In h is bid to stre ngthen h is h ol d on firs t pl ace, Kopecky ran off the track in the first tu rn on lap three. Ste rn took adva ntage and motored away for a n easy wi n, follo wed by Curtis Ada ms (Yam) and Kopecky, who had reentered the race. Stern a nd Ko pecky also ba ttl ed for Open Superstreet class honors, with Stern taking the win after passing ea rly leader Ko pecky. Kop ecky (Kaw) and Earl Ro loff (Kaw) fought too th -and -na il in th e Open Modified Prod uction class , with Kopeck y getting a long-awaited win over Roloff aft er making a slick last la p pass. Ro lo ff didn't go away empty handed, however, as he handil y took first p lace in bo th the O pe n Stock Prod uction a nd 600cc Modified Prod uction classes. Don Warren (Ya m) won in the 450cc Stock Production clas s, putting in a fine effort to o u tdis ta nce a fierc e battle between newcomer Mark Schubert (Ya m) and Kenneth Furlong (Ya m) . Schubert prevailed to take seco nd pl ace by holding off a hardcha rgin g Furlong , who tried to draft pa st him on th e home stretch . on ly to be denied. Alex White (Yam) took the holesh o t a nd th e win in 450cc Modified Production, with Schubert and Warren working th eir way through the field to vie for second pl ace by th e third la p. Tucker tops Kamikaze attack By Bo b and Diane Bell SUPERSTIT ITIO N MTS, CA, SEPT. 22 Imperial Valley Cycle Center's J ames Tucker took his H onda 125 to the overal l vic tory in the I25/250cc race at the AMA Distr ict 38's Ka m ika ze Attack H a re Scra mbles. Also wi nmng their respecti ve classes were Suzuki/Yamaha of Lem on Grove ow ner Bill Silvert horn (KTM) in th e Vet/Senior race and Steve Wal ker (H on) in the Open Race. Three separate, five-lap races were run o ver a seven -m ile mudhill course with so me silt bed s and a nearly impossibl e looking hill thrown in . When they lined up for the start of the 125/250cc Expert race , the talk was not about first , but wh o would get seco nd, as three-time National MX Champion Marty Smith (Kearny Mesa Yamaha ) stra ddled hi s YZ250. However, wh en th e d ust cleared , Smith was still sitt ing on th e sta rt line with a broken chain. Leading th e run 10 ch eck one was a wi ld -ridi ng Tucker . " I didn 't know Smith broke down so I didn 't let off for any th ing; I figured h e had to be right behind me," sta ted Tucker. Gordon Clark (KSI/ Du ra lu be) trailed right beh ind on his Yam aha 250. As th e race progressed , Tucker stretched hi s lead to th e fini sh , sett in g th e fastest five-lap time of the da y by over one minute. C lark was a ble to keep Tucker in sig ht through lap three until he began to slow slig h tly due to a recove ri ng knee inj ury. John Griffin (Hon) seized th is opportunity an d went past Clark to finish secon d overall , first 125cc Amateur. Clark maintai ned an easy third to the finish for first 250cc. At th e start of th e Vet/Senior race , it was Vet Expert Brett " Brea kdown " Cushing lead in g the run to check one, whi le Senior Expert Silverthorn was in his dust on ly a few seconds
