Miller. Bast gets lucky at Baylands By w. H. Spencer FREMONT, CA, SEPT. 28 " I got luck y," was the first 'com m en t that Ba rt Bast made tonight after winning the Ba ylands Racewa y Park Class A Speedway Championship. His reference was to the start of the 16-ri der, 20-event a ll -scratch program . With heavy hitters like Steve Martin, Pat Linn and Pa ul Orlandi at th e start, it was a pivota l first round surro unded with controversy. The first four rolled out and three were promptly down in the first tu rn, the product of a little slippage. On the nex t try, the first turn ate two, wh ile on the third try it only a te one when Linn, who ha d gotten a bad start, saw to it that it wou ld take four starts to get the first event into the book . When the g reen finally fle w, it wa s' Orlandi from the pole a lo ng with Bast, o n h is Bast Bros. Welding/Sierra Pro d uts Weslake, wh ile Lin n was trying desperately to keep some sort of outside line. Martin put on a hard charge as O rl a nd i crashed on his own, while Bast set sail for the first wm. O ff th e pole for the second event was Mike Delacy, on h is n umber one Bicycle Sh o p / A &: A Ra cing/Oilzall Weslake, wi nning big time over Jim Sisem ore's VacAero/ Weslake. John Houston Jr. ha d the outside line in that race but it was in effective early on. The Bay la nds rookie of the year , Scott Brant, aced the third event from the pole on his Bru ce Porter/Brant Eng. special wit h Mike Parson second over Hi-Point/Team Vooch's Greg Martz and Rocky Robinson, on th e MPE/Sierra/Custom Eng. spe cial. Orlandi and the Quaker Stat e/HiPoint Weslake made up for hi s firstround cra sh by w inning event five over Steve Crawford a nd Mik e Dela cy. Brant made his second rid e of the night look real easy with som e fancy wide lim's, wh ile Bast kept h im ho nest ; th ey were the only two with perfect scores for round two in event seven. Linn topped th e eig h th event ov er teammate T om Ferris o n th e Petrich Cycle Specials . Mike Parsons a nd th e Richmond Yamaha/BMW/ Ja wa won the thirdround open er from the outsid e, while Orlandi crashed for th e second time. Martin and th e MPE/Team Trim sp ecial took event 10, keeping Delacy on th e low-scoring .side o nce aga in , wh ile Dav e Cox pi ck ed up hi s thi rd straight goose eg g for th e H ealth Ra cing/Dick 's G ar age bunch . Bast showed up for round II a nd zoome d th e troops with a win ov er J ohn H ous ton a nd G reg Martz. Brant cha n ged tires a nd promptl y cra shed ou t of co ntentio n with Sisem ore, who wa s the winner in event 12. Settling down for th e seco nd half, Sisem ore sta rte d down a nd won fro m the poll' w ith Fer ris and Orland i fo llowing . Mik e Pars o ns lopped even t 1·1a fter Mart in cl ip ped th e rea l' wh eel o f Parson a nd lxriled. Joe Led uc and th e 1I'0opS go t ca ugh t in the tapes. and Dela cy sh owed th e way h O lll I' alt er th e restart a head of Bast. Nationals. . Linn pi cked up hi s seco nd win o f the even in g and wa s back in ro n ten lion with a superior ride a nd win over Kid Curry 's B&\\' Mach ine sh op Specia l. Going into th e fina l round, Bast had II points over Sisemore's 10. Linn and Dela cy were still in th e hunt with nine. In event 17, Houston won handil y over Orlandi and Brant. Martz startled the n ext group with a win over Sisemore tha t rea lly brought th e crowd to atten tion . Wh en event 19 came to the line, it wa s Bast on the pole, and a win wou ld put the ch a m pionship to wraps. Bast read the tape well a n d exited turn one just right, leading to the checkered flag . Up for grabs in the last rou nd was th e tie bet ween Delacy and Lin n , and if ei ther were to win , then a tie would occur with Sisemore for second. Delacy ha d the pole and Linn was on the outside. At th e green , L in n had the right li ne, but the traction wasn't cooperating and Delacy held on for a win and th e tie. Tommy H eddon won the best- two-of-three show, and in the sudden-death ride Sisemore was the anti-climactic winner all th e way and second overall . The Junior championship was its usual wide and wooly affair. Bobby Heddon topped the first round on the Team Stephe ns /Shoe/ PJ-I Special ove r Ken Wag ner and Dusti n Schroder. Schroder blew them away in the seco nd round from the pole, but Heddon won the fina l two rounds for an overall I I points total and yet another ti tle. _ Results OVERALL: 1: Bart Bast (14): 2.
