It seemed th at each team had th e right combination dialed in as th e lap times stayed steady a nd ga ins o r losses proceed ed qu ietly. Ken Botharn a nd Pi erce Buck were running a n RZ350 Yamaha and managed 10 circu la te a t I:15s until an exhaust pipe ca m e adrift a n d tossed Bo th am off, end ing th eir hopes 10 a finish . But di saster struck wh en Yearwood lost contro l o f th e bike a nd tossed it. O n lap tw o , Meyer and Hull both powered into turn three a little 100 hot, th eir m omentum carrying th em to th e haybales at th e top of the turn . Surber scooted by o n th e pole to ta ke the lead , and Scott Will iams, a ftc r sta rt ing from th e back row, m oved into seco n d .
