Edge WHITEHORSE, Y.T., CANADA, JULY [2-14 Alaskan and Canadian racers met for th e annual three da y International Race of Champions in Whitehorse, Yukon T erritory, Ca na da . Racer s from parts of Alaska co m peted against those fro m British Columbia, Yukon Territory and Northwest T erritories with Alaskans co m ing a wa y with [3 out of 14 class wins. Ea ch day consis ted of a different type of race testing th e a ll aro u nd a bili ty of the racer. Da y one was a T .T., day two a 44-m ile cross co u ntry a nd th e co m pe ti tio n ended o n day three with a motocross. N umber one Yukon racer Rob Koll a of Whitehorse was th e favorite to win on hi s home tracks, but bad lu ck pl agued h im every day . It wa s Er ik Munson an d J eff MacDonald o f Fairbanks, Alaska ta kin g th e major sha re of wins. Munson a nd Kolla set a fa st pace during Friday n ight's T.T. p ractice an d both lined up in th e fir st 250cc heat. Yukon Honda sp o nsored Kolla sh ot into th e lead with Munson stuck in midpack, but two la ps later Munson an d hi s Northern Power Sports' Suzuki were kn ocking a t hi s door. Munson got a little physical in a tu rn an d Koll a went down. Munson finish ed first while Kolla was a ble to remou nt a n d fini sh fif th to qualify for th e main. T he m ain wa s a repl a y of h eat one righ t down to the part wh ere Koll a a nd Munson tangl ed a nd Koll a fell. Munson aga in wo n with Kolla co ming in fourth . Key does what's needed at Hills FerryST By Bill Spencer NEWMAN, CA , JULY 5 Mark Key kn ew h e needed a good start in the 500cc Expert main event at Hills Ferry Raceway to keep the upper hand on Chad Felicio and did hi s job j ust pe rfect for th e win in a good battl e. Bryan McDo well , meanwhile, seem ed ready to tak e th ird wh en he broke an o il lin e and had to pull o ff with brother Bobby McDowell taking over th ird pl ace. A very fin e race track greeted th e hol id ay weekend cro wd wi th Eri c Mart in th e winner in th e Pee Wee class o ver Aaron Cis co while Paul Zemke topped th e 60cc class o ver J ohn Mi tchell. Robert Bacosa ap pea red to hav e it a ll in hand in th e 250cc Novi ce fest, bu t he ra n out o f gas while leading on hi s n ewl y found 500 ride. T he SK Cycle racer fou nd better p ickings in th e 500cc Novice class passin g qu ickly to seco n d bu t it w as a no go for first behind Bo bb y Spea rs. Tak ing th e win in th e 250cc Novice show was Joe Leon a rd Jr. , back a fter a seven -yea r hi atus wh en he wa s a real good J unior but go t hurt. Smith takes two at D-38 Carlsbad GP By Bob and Diane Bell CARLSBAD, CA , J ULY 7 T h ree-time National Champion Marty Smith rode his Kearny Mesa Yamaha 250 to the win ners circle twice today at the AMA D-38 T ankslappers G rand Prix. First he took a come-fro m- beh ind win in th e 250cc/Open race an d th en followed it with a wire-to-wire solo ride in th e team race. " T he track was a little dust y, but fun, " Smith said. The Tankslappers set up an in cred ib le cou rse which used nearly every sq ua re in ch o f th e Ca rlsbad Raceway hillsides and h ad lap times pushing o ver 10 m inutes. The first race o f th e day was the I25cc/Senior/Vet competition. Robbie Nolan (Kaw) took command early o n hi s 125cc bik e a n d pulled out to an a lm ost 30 second lead in the first lap of the seven m ile co u rse. By the end of the one-hour ra ce, Nolan h ad severa l minutes on the second pl ace bike of Ron Yonekura (Kaw ). Yonekura 's race was not so eas y as he traded places every lap with IVCC's Jim Tucker ( H o n ) a n d brother John Yonekura (Kaw ). The final positions were decided down th e asp ha lt o n th e fina l lap with Tucker becoming a Kawasaki sandwich at third followed by John Yonekura in fourth . " I left my desert gearing on and wa s able to p ass one of th em every lap on the asp ha lt ," stated Tucker. Jim H awkins took the victory in th e Vet ra ce followed by sen ior winn er , Bill Silverth orn (KT M). The start of th e 250cciOpen ra ce wa s near disa ster for Smith. " I so rt of to ok m yself o u t in th e third turn. I co u ld n ' t g et my bars stra igh tened , so I figured I'd better ge t going." Meanwh il e, J o h n Co n ney (250cc Kaw ) wa s running out Ironr .Iollowed by Kearn y Mesa Yamah a 's Lee Ramage. Ramage had gone down, af ter leading th e 250s, wh ile trying to pass an Open bik e and broke hi s front brake lever , but he was a ble to reel in Conney by lap four and maintain a clo se seco nd even without a fro nt brake. Back in th e pack , Smith had been passing riders at a n a larm ing rate of sp eed while working up to third with a little over a lap to go. Conney and Ramage rode their best, but th ey were no m atch for Smith as he blew past both riders and into first with less th an half a lap left . Conney trailed in seco nd with Ramage third. IVCC's T om Moen (Yam) took the Open class lead early in th e race and ran uncontested to th e finish . Coming in second was Coast Coatings Mark McPerr y (Yam ) followed by Jeff Boyd in third. The tea m ra ce went much sm oo ther for Smith a s h e holeshot the start and nev er looked back . Ramage's bad lu ck contin u ed into this ra ce. After runn ing second for four laps, fate struc k again. " My brake lever j ust fell off." This ended any chanc e h e had for a top finish. Inheriting seco nd a nd holding it to th e finish was th e 250cc Kawasaki team o f Conney and Nolan. Moen took his second win of the day in th e Open class and th ird ove ra ll. This helps h im clo se in on cu rrent points leader SCOtt Hatfield who teamed with Mark McPerry for second open. Baja 500 winner , Jim Tucker and 1985 SCORE number one rider Ed Fol and proved unbeatable in th e [25s a nd to o k th e clas s win and a n in credibl e fourth overall , both riding Tucker 's Honda . Second 125cc fell to th e team of Honda rid er J oe Lane (who partnered with Tucker in th e Baja 500) a nd San Diego Kawasaki West's Bob Bell after com ing from back in th e p ack due to a first turn p ile up. " We came from alm ost la st to 10th overall ; it wa s funl " said Bell of th eir rac e. Felicio, Key take Lodiwins By Bill Spencer i.om. CA, JULY 5 Lodi Cycle Bowl finished up its Friday night series with great racing and Chad Felicio the big winner in th e 500cc Expert class. Felici o a lso wrapped up a second in th e Pro-Am behind th e almost unbea tabl e Mark Key on th e Ol ympic T u ne H arl ey-Davidson. Rid in g for th e Prundale Club a nd Sh oei H elmets, Fel icio had to chase Key in the Pro-Am portion as Key had one of hi s patented starts from th e o u tside line and nothing would m o ve him out of th e wa y, n ot even 33
