R ichit er pressured Burg ess in the firs t m ot o bu t had to give way to th e yo u nger r ide r. In th e second rno to Bu rgess (Han ) wa s aga in in th e lead a nd pulling a way whil e r u n nin g in secon d was j ack G eorge (Han) riding o u t of P ecwan . In third wa s Richiter (H o n) who wa s o n th e mov e and trying to make a p ass in a fa st left hand comer. T ed Steck (H o n ), however, collided with Ri ch it er a nd they both went down . R ich i ter wa s fir st up and off in pursuit o f Burgess a nd was gaining ground a t a fast pace. Ri chiter, seemingly , had better lines in th e comers, but Burgess's Honda had the power in the straights. By never missing a beat, Burgess took th e win and the overal l. R ich iter was second followed by George. Ka larnath Falls, Oregon rider radica l Ron Mi lligan (Hon ) in his first P ro ride won the 250cc class. His wins in both m otos didn 't co me easy, however, as Dave Creech (Han) gave Milligan a ll h e could handle in both motos . T emperatures in the 100's left the rider s drai ned a fter the mOlDS as Creech placed second a nd 10011 rider Doug Fri sbee (Suz) finished third. A good tum o u t o f 80s saw Eddy H anson (Kaw) run wire-to-wire in th e Beg inn er class to take theoverall. H anson was the o verall w inner o f the Mot o-One Su m mer Ser ies a nd is continuing h is w inning wa ys. H is main co mpetit io n in bo th mot os ca rne from J ohn Sm yth (Ya m), but H anson 's Kawasaki clearly had the edge o n power a nd H anson had a comfortable lea d a t th e flag. Kevin R ichi ter (Hon ) put in two good rides fo r th e th ird spot overa ll. In the 60s Darrell Mabry (Hon ) won th e class fo llo we d by Larry McKee (Han) with j ason H unsu cker (Hon) fini sh in g thi rd . In 250cc Pro action , Fresno ' s Damon Webb (Ya m ) and Pat Sparks ( P jIlO / NeaIlP e tty P rodu cts) put their bikes into the WFO mode while trying to put some distance between themselves and Kawasaki rider Tony R icha rds (Moto rs West/Maxey Porting) who was running third. A Iew laps into the race, Webb suddenly pulled off therourse with what looked like a broken chain. This gave Sparks the lead , while series point leader Steve Lucente new past R ichards and into the second place position on a set or doubles. Tim Winslow (Yam), bad worked his way up from a lu kewarm start to third and was rapidly catching Lucente. Donald Franklin was holding his own in fourth as Tony Flores, ( IX Fo Cycle Imports/Team S) was running firth after looping out at the start and later taking a fall in a muddy left band comer. After the moto, Lucente was protested for passing Richards over the doubles whi le the yel lo w flag was being waved, This m oved everyo ne in th e class u p a n otch and gave secon d place to \ ' inslo w. Come the second m ota , W inslo w gat a good stan a nd took the lead as th e pack exited the firs t romer. Flores , who many bad picked to win his class h ands down, was runn ing a fast second. Tony R ichards was gassing his Ka wa saki for all it wa s worth in third . Sparks, who won the firs t rnoto , gated poorly a nd was back in seventh p lace. T wo la ps in to the race, Fl o res wired his S uzuki's throttle to the stops a nd skirted around Wi nslow fo r the lead. L ucente soon passed R icha rds for third and set his center of attention o n \ \Tinslo w , but Wi nslow was not about to let himself be passed. TI13t's how the top th ree fin ished with Fl o res taking the la ndslide wi n that trackside rumormongers predicted, Greg Torgerson powers his Husqvama to a win in the 500cc Pro class in Round Five of the Hawaiian Holiday Motocross Series. _ At the other end of th e 250cc spectrum, the Novice class saw San Ardo's Kenneth Diggs take the lead with Harry Boudakian runn ing second on his H o nda. Third place was under Kawasaki rider David Van Wart's control when Jim Quaschnick snuck up behind him a nd tried a do or die pass over a j ump. After nea rly endoing his Yamaha, Q uaschnick bounced into th ird place. Q u a sch n ick quickly recovered, ho wever and p ut a more safe a nd sane pass on Buda k ia n for second . Di ggs soon fell prey to Q uaschn ick 's pursuit a nd eventually fou nd hi mself in third; after Budakian sl ipped by fo r second place. Comi ng across the finish line, Q ua sch n ic k and his clean Yamaha were way out front. Budakia n ended up with a second as SU2Uki rider R ic k Mattos worked his way into a third place at the finish. The second mota found Boudakian nabbing the lead with Diggs fo llowing in second. Quaschnick made sho rt work of Diggs a nd set out a fte r Boudakian. Half a lap later Quaschn ick passed Boudakian ov er a jump a nd look o ff from th e pack. Qua schn ick a nd Boudakian held o nto first a nd second place u ntil th e checkered with Mano s again worki ng his wa y up to fin ish third a t the end. In the 500cc Intermediate class, Aaron P ipes (P J II Peuy/ O ' Nea l) g u n n ed down the com peti tio n o n hi s big Honda by winning both hi s motos by a co nvincing m argin. Berry wins big at Black Hills MX By Brian George RAPID CITY, SD, J ULY 14 With the Borderline Racing Association taking a week off from its points-pa ying motocross events Sunday, only 60 riders turned o ut a t the Black H ill s Speedway to compete in a non-points stad iu rncross race, a n d wer e surprised to find th e course being run back wards for the fir st time.
