Mother Nature helped out with a n ice ra ins ho wer th e n ight befor e the event . th en liberal am ounts of sawdust went o n th e morning o f the race and dust was never a factor. One event th at was spe cial to th e celebra tio n was a jump-off at halftime. with Budweiser p u tti ng u p $1 per foot to th e longest jumper, a n d KSQY radi o o f Deadwood th rowing in 10 free a lbu ms for th e fart hes t leap. LeeVern Berr y ca rne o u t with a long practice jump that would hav e won the co m petit io n. but th e landing was so har sh he bar el y su rvived to jump in the two ac tual rounds for th e prize money. In that jump-off. Berry put up th e longest jump o f the first round, but in the fina l jumps. Opening up th e fir st 125cc Pro mota. Berry let it be known he was going for all the cash as he holeshot th e ra ce and proceeded to pull aw ay from the competition. Behind. Mike Friend and Bill y Stork wer e trading the runner-up slot back and forth. with Stork moving in for good on the fifth lap. As the top three moved through lapped traffic ear ly on the short circuit.
