II Twice a year, Edwards Air Force Base hosLS motocross racing sanctioned by California Racing Cl ub. Thanks to the Desert Wheels (the base motorcycle club) the track was excellently maintained providing fantastic racing. Honda rider Wild William Surratt used fast riding and a little bit of good luck to win the 250cc Pro class. In the first moto, Ed Arnet, riding an '85 YZ250 Yamaha, rocketed into the lead with Surratt gl ued to his rear fender after the first turn. After getting a little out of shape through the first turn, Surratt stayed close to Arnet throughout the rest of the moto. Arnet held on to take the win. The second moto was very similar to the first round - Arnet took control of the lead early in the race, but Surratt hung close. Surratt dogged Arnet for four laps, applying continuous pressure - the strategy paid off. Halfway through the fifth lap, Arnet's bike began slowing and finally gave up at the bottom of a hill. Arnet could not get his mount restarted and was forced to push his bike up a sandy hill and back to the pits. Surratt just motored on by and cruised on to take the win. Back in third, John Drury rode steadily to capture two thirds for second overall. The 125cc Intermediate race without question belong to Eddie Hicks. All Intermediates raced in one combined class (including 250s and Opens), but Hicks still managed to outclass them all. Most of the handlebar-to·handlebar action took place over the second and third spot. In the First moto, Jeff Mabery didn't have too much difficulty securing the second position, .but Jeff Capt and Jeff Black fought seriously ovenhird. Capt chased Black through out the moto and waited until about 100 yards from the finish before making the pass for third. Hicks easily took the overall, while Capt took second overall ahead of Mabery, Jim Owen and Chris Cole. Despite heavy challenges from Rick Denison and Danny Barnett, Yamaha rider Tony Pulliam kept his cool and won the 250cc Novice class. In the 250cc Beginner class, Terry Smith captured the holeshot in both motos on a very thrashed looking Yamaha but couldn't stay there for very long. Brad Pace dethroned Smith of his lead and went on to take the win, while Max Hernandez settled for second. However, Hernandez retaliated in the second moto by taking the win and capturing the overall. Hundamounted Wolfgang Krogman wound up second overall, while Chris Paulsen finished in the third spot. Californians Joey DePew (Hon) and Jason Mathews (Yam) controlled the Mini A main event, leading start to finish. Joe Don Ireland (Hon) did all he could. to keep them in his sights, but finished third. Kawasaki riders Hank Peterson and Brandon Offord did a number on the 80cc A main competitors, and fast gal Kristin Cowan (Yam) rode a steady pace to finish third. The surprise of the evening was Todd Alter and his Honda. Alter has picked up the art of short tracking and came away with the holeshOl in the 250cc A main event. He clobbered a field that included Steve Croucher (Suz) and Harsha (Hon). Harsha had his troubles and finished well back after mounting a valiant charge. The checkers came out signalling a win for Alter and a second place for Croucher; third was Steve Barrell (Yam). Alter came right back in the Open A main, but found himself trailing when the pack hit the first turn. Mike Hamilton, on a TT500 Yamaha, and Ingel argued over first. Ingel controlled from the early going all the way to the finish. Ingle's YZ490based 'tracker worked superbly and he breezed to the win with Hamilton in second and Alter third. Harsha looked to improve his dismal finish in the 250cc A main with a :0 "More control and less fatigue!
