Brown's mudbath at Wilseyville' HS By W. H. Spencer WILSEYVILLE, CA, NOV. II Pat Brown has been riding the classic wintertime hare scrambles at Wilseyville's Schaad's .Resort for the past five years, and the hard e££ort finally paid off on the final lap this year. After three solid days of heavy rains, today's 10 and one-half mile. six-lap race was a definite mudbath. Leading o££ the start was motocrosser Mike Marquez, who was chased closely by Lance Coleman. The two stayed close together for the first lap, with the Moore and Sons 125 KTM doing a tremendous job of leading in the slop. At the second water crossing of the second lap, Coleman drownedout, giving Marquez a giant lead at the start of the third lap.. 16 Gary Vanderpool was the first Vet Expert in, followed closely by archrival Scott Davis. They're close in points, with each rider going for the top plate in this last race. Davis closed the gap on Vanderpool's So. City Cycle KTM, but when they pitted, Davis left camp asking the crew to get a tube and tire ready for the rear of his Honda. Dave Bertram and Charlie Halcomb closed the gap on Marquez on the fourth lap, with Brown and Ken McKenzie holding close over Ken Ramsey and John Haaker. The going was tough as the ground hardened in some areas and the creeks deepened. Billy Grossi encountered troubles, and limped back in after losing a few gaJIons ofwatedrom his Husky. He said, "I was closing in on Marquez then I hit a creek crossing exactly the way I had the lap before, and it sank." Starting lap five Marquez dropped out, and Bertram took over the lead after Halcomb's bike drowned-out. McKenzie was second, just seconds behind, with Brown a heartbeat back. Ramsey related afterward," I was just motoring along, knowing I wasn't in real good contention when I saw Bertram out. Then McKenzie. passed me, he had passed me earlier and then he must of got stuck or went o££ course. Just a mile from the end Brown went by, and right at the checkered I got Haaker- I'mjust happy to be here." "I never saw McKenzie," said Brown, "I have been coming here for five years just to win this and it sure feels good." At the start oJ last year, Brown opened the National Hare Scrambles season with a win .at Hollister, but he only rides for fun and when it's close. McKenzie took the second overall, while Ramsey and Haaker rode in for third and fourth overall. So. City Cycles' ]e££ Henning took the fifth in Open Expert. Vanderpool and his Dave Harristuned KTM 495 was the last guy to make the six-lap bit and won the Vet Expert class by a large margin as Davis had a lot of trouble changing tires. Russ Fay topped Curt McMahon for OT Expert honors, but McMahon will take the top-rated plate. Results OPEN EX: 1. Pat Brown; 2. Ken McKenzie; 3. Ken Ramsey; 4. John Haaker; 5. II When the National Motosports Association (NMA) made their first appearance ever at Santa Maria's Spillway Park, they were greeted by perfect racing wea ther and an immaculately prepared track. The rider who seemed to have a handle on the fastest line all day long was George Vlach who took his Stock and Modified 125cc Kawasakis to four wins. Another rider who had little trouble during the day was Chris Lara, also on Kawasakis. He was victorious in three of the four motos he ran in the 83cc Intermediate Stock and Modified divisions, and finished second in the only race he didn't win. Lara and Chris Young, riding Yamahas, fought it out all day long in the two classes, but Young was only able to defeat Lara once. Kyle Lewis made a tremendous charge in the first moto of the 83cc Modified Expert class coming from last place on the first lap to fifth place on the second lap. Lewis then passed one competitor per lap for the rest of the race taking the Lead and the wi n on the final circuit. His charge only netted him third for the day, however, behind Rob Gordon and Shane Trittler, after an unimpressive fifth place finish in the second event. Lewis fared better in the 83cc Stock Expert division when he finished second in the first event and first in the second to earn Iirst place for the day. Results PEE WEE STK: 1. Pablo Lara (Vam); 2. Dwyer delectable in Bakersfield speedway By Scott Daloisio BAKERSFIELD, CA, NOV. 10 Mark Dwyer of Riverside captured his first·ever Scratch main vicLOry to cap off a thrilling night of speedway action at the Kern County Fairgrounds in Bakersfield Saturday night. Dwyer (Frank Schiavone Construction/D.]. 's Ticket Service/Gene Thurman Racing/ Arai/M]B/Oakley/Hair By Bev Weslake) stru~gled to transfer from his Scratch heat but he was unstoppable in his last two rides. He came (rom gate number two in the main and was outgated by Andy Northrup, but Dwyer swept i.nside Northrup on the first bend for the lead. Rob "Five Flavors" Pft!tzing went down but bounced right back up on lap two while running third. Pfetzing, not having his best race. then wheelied coming off turn two on the third revolution. He was headed straight for the seven-foot concrete wall on the back chute when he stepped off. His bike blasted into the wall, still in a wheel ie, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, Pfetzing was uninjured. With Pfetzing done with his wild ride, the crowd returnf;d to watching Dwyer and Northrup. Dwyer rode a pictureperfect race and wheelied past the Scratch main checkered flag for his\ first-ever win. Northrup' was second! three lengths back. with Greg Ayers third. Young Walt Farnum from Ventura proved he was far too talented for his zero yard line starting spot as he rode the Q-I05 ]awa to a clean sweep in the Handicap portion of the program. Farnum destroyed the field in the main, leaying the boys to battle for second-place. John Foster and impressive rookie Jim Sisemore were having a spirited battle for second until Sisemore went down on the final lap, giving Foster an uncontested second-place finish. Eddie Castro came all the way from the 30 for third. Richard Perkins led II of the 12 Second Division laps he competed in Saturday night. Unfortunately, the onlv one he didn't lead was the last lap 'in the main. Perkins had it in the bag until he bobbled comingofflurn four - that allowed 20-yard-line rider Don Butler (Dick's Garage/]&:M Trophy &: Silk Screen/Mike Sullivan Racing Associates Weslake) to sneak by for the win. Perkins recovered to claim second with Rick Hicks third. Norman Neuman (Jawa) turned out to be a very ha ppy man as he won his first Third Division main by a long margin over Mike Dwyer (the father of Scratch main winner Mark Dwyer). "Banzai" Eleanor finished third. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Mark Owyer (Wes); 2. Andy Northrup (Wes); 3. Greg Ayers (Wesl; 4. Rob Pfetz· ing (Wes). • HANDICAP: 1. Walt Farnum (Jawl; 2. Hoenshell blasts Motorcycle RacewayMX By Tim Tolleson OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, NOV. II Clay Hoensbell continued to dominate the Expert class at Motorcycle Raceway MX Park with wire-to-wire wins. Hoenshell survived challenges from Chan Baker and a mechanical problem to take the top Expert cash. In the first moto, Hoenshell powered his RM500 into the lead over CR500-mounted Scott Cook and Baker. Cook made a bid for the lead in the first turn, but Hoenshell got the better drive out of the corner. Baker latched on to Hoenshell's fender and dropped Cook to third. Cook started swapping down the whoop-out back straight and almost recovered, but the briars lining the back section sucked him up. He crashed hard and was out for the day. Rick Kirk took over third, while Baker applied ,heavy pressure to Hoenshell. The duel lasted until midmoto, then Hoenshell pulled away. He lost his muffler latein the mota, but Baker was 100 far back to capitalize on the situation. Hoenshell won with Baker second, Kirk third and Greg Brown fourth. Hoenshell holeshot the start of the second moto over Brown and Kirk. Baker banzaied past Brown and Kirk before Hoenshell could place himself ou t of reach. Ba ker aga in tried to force Hoenshell into making a mis: take, but Hoenshell would have none of that. Brown went down and gave Kirk third, then Baker lost it and gave Kirk second. Baker remounted and reeled-in Kirk, but the Suzuki pilot held his advantage to the checkered. Hoenshell cruised to the win over Kirk, Baker and Robert Felix. Kirk's (3-2) rides netted him second overall ahead of Baker's (2-3) rides. Tommy Newman dvercame two crashes and topped both motos in the I25cc Intermediate class. Mike Morrison holeshot moto one over Newman and Mike Ables. Morrison held the Kawasaki pilot at bay for three laps, then Newman took the lead and sailed to the win over Morrison and Ables. Morrison took the early lead at the start of the second moto over Ables and Newman, who quickly grabbed second from Ables and reeled in Morrison. When Newman tried to dive under Morrison in a tight right hander, Newman went down and let Ables take second. Newman berserked it, caught Ables then crashed again. He remounted and frantically set after the Suzuki riders. On the last lap Newman dispatched Ables in the woods and r;eeled.in Morrison. New-
