Mike Bell took the 250cc Pro class win at California Racing Club's motocross at Indian Dunes Cycle Park today. The course was a copy of the Superbowl track; even a psuedo-peristyIe was included. PJ-I and Van Nuys Cycle were the sponsors of the event. Willie Surratt £lew orr the starting line of the Pro race, followed bv Don Goettling and Mike BelJ (who ~as on a borrowed bike, after having apparently blown his race machine in practice). The pace was furious but there was no change for two laps. On lap three, Goettling broke through the soft berm of a hairpin right after the peristyle and Bell scampered by. By mid-race, Bell was within striki.ng distance of Surratt, and slipped by.him in the next lap, but Surratt h.ung rigl'it in there. In a series of tight S-turns, Surratt apparently had the hot line. He spent two laps faking to the outside when entering these turns, then on lap 10, cut deep inside and passed Bell to regain the lead. Betl put on a big rush at the end of the moto, but Surratt hung tough for the motowin. Moto two started with a battle between Surratt and Goettling, who had finished the first molO in third. Bell had a bad start and was back in the pack. Goettling kept the pressure on Surratt, but couldn't findan opening. Bell began moving up steadily until he was on Goettl ing's rear fender. Bell was able to go through the deep whoops on the far side of the course faster than Goettling, and passed him just before a table-top jump. With his momentum, Bell caught and passed Surratt in the middle of lap four. Bell needed this win for first overall, and so did Surratt. Bell kept shutting the door on Surratt's attempts 10 get by in the esses as before, and took the moto Wtn. Those multiple S-turns gave everyone in the 250cc Intermediate ranks fits. Gary Sailors took an immediate lead in moto one and didn't need to look back. Every time someone tried to move up to challenge, lhey would have problems in lhose turns and drop back. Jon Barrick had the best line behind Sailors and stayed in second for mostofthe race, including the finish. Third changed hands severaltimes, with Doug Russell occupying it at the end. Kevin Valenti was first o£f the line in moto two, but when they emerged from the esses, Sai lors was once more in command and went on for the win and the overall. Once again, there was a lot of swapping behind the leader and as before, Barrick moved up to second by the finish. This time Curt Farrar £inished third, but third overall went to Mark Brown.
