Denton, Holley Peterson nab Night Nationals By Rex Reese GARDENA, CA, NOV. 9 Gary Denton did double duty tonight at the second annual CMC/Pro-Trac Trailers-sponsored Night Nationals at Ascot ..... Raceway as he smoked the 125cc Pros and finished second overall in the 250cc Pros behind Yamaha-supported jim "Hollywood" Holley. Holley, who made his first appearance at Ascot in over a year, easily outclassed the rest of the pack in both motos. Winning the 500cc Pros was Hondamounted Todd Peterson. But the big bucks winner was Denton, who took home almost $300 for a relatively easy night's work. In rhe first l25cc Pro moro, Denton (SUl) took a narrow lead over Mike He~!eyJSlfz) and Doug Dubach (Suz); right up there was Craig Canoy (SUl). With almost 20 riders .on the tight Ascot track, passing was very difficult in some sections for those stuck in the pack. Denton, however, was able to take advantage of the confusion and made his getaway. At the end of the first round, it was Denton, with Healey and Dubach having to settle for second and third, respectively. Moto two in the 125cc Pros again saw Denton and Dubach dueling it out for the lead, this time followed by Tim Rutherford (Kaw), Healey, Canoy and Rob Trone (Hon). Dubach rattled bars with Denton for the first couple of laps before Denton decided to get down to business. Denton did, taking the second moto handily, as well as the overall. Dubach came in for second overall, followed by Rutherford who scored fourth; Healey, who dropped to fifth by the end of the moto, was in for third overall. Both rounds of the 250cc Pros had just one thing in common - jim Holl~y. tldlley t09k no time"il1 each moto to grab the holeshot, then build. up an enormous lead for himself. Nobody else was even close. The real racing in the class was between Denton (SUl) and Todd Peterson (Hon) who constantly battled for second place. The first moto saw Peterson beat Denton as the Hondamounted rider played cut-and-thrust all around the track with his opponent until the checkered flag dropped. In moto two, Denton paid back the favor and shut the door a few times on Peterson in a few of the one-line comers on the track, then denied the Honda rider, the chance for second by smoking him down the smooth front straight. The second moto win was good enough to give Denton second overall, with Peterson third. Dave Graff (Hon) was founh, Rick Atkins (SUl) fifth, and former Mini Expert Willie Surratt (Hon) came back from a couple get-offs to finish sixth overall. In the 500cc Pros, Peterson didn't have Denton to worry about, and sailed to wins in both motos. The first moto had Atkins (SUl), Robot Rodgers (Hon), Pete Murray (M-S) and Peterson all at the front of the pack. Murray soon slipped back and was replaced by Chris Craft (Hon), then Peterson jammed by Atkins to roost for the rest of the moto to a win. Atkins finished second. Rodgers third, Murray regained ground for fourth, and Craft was fifth. The second moto was more decisive as Peterson took the holeshot fair and square. Atkins motored around in second, followed by Rodgers, who was dicing it out with Murray, Dan Berg (Hon) and Craft. Peterson and Atkins were able to maintain their positions to the finish, but Murray got past Rodgers to clinch third. For the overall, it was Peterson, Atkins and Murray, with Rodgers fourth, and Craft's second-moto sixth good enough for fifth. Results 60 NOV: ,. Joel Tokarsky (Kaw): 2. Evans' event at CoronaMX By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, NOV. 2 The Mini Intermediate class was once again the scene of some very close racing tonight at Corona Raceway_ Rincon Kawasaki's Dustin Evans pulled off the overall victory by winning both motos. Kevin Bussey (Kaw) grabbed the holeshot in the first moto, with Evans close behind and Novice jacob Swain (Pjl/Kaw) trailing. Bussey and Evans quickly pulled away and began their battle for first, as Swain held third'for the first lap until being passed by Intermediate Steve Womboldt (Dallas Baker/Kiw) on the second go'round. Half way into the six-lap race, Bussey still held a very slim lead over Evans, while Womboldt was a distant third. At this point Evans seemed to pour on the steam, dogging Bussey in every comer. Bussey held him back for a lap until Evans found a way by for the lead. On the fifth lap Bussey battled back into first, but Evans kept up the pressure. Heading into the final lap the two battled back and forth; neither one' seemed able to gain any advantage. Evans managed to get by in the hills though, and made his pass stick as Bussey tried desperately to reclaim first in the~ firtal turns. Wamboldt
