was a distant third ahead of Pomona Valley Kawasaki's Wesley Klein. Bussey once again nabbed the holeshot in moto two, but this time Evans didn't waste any time and took the lead on the first lap. Bussey didn't appear to be up for a fight as he let Evans slip away while Womboldt came up from behind. Two laps later Womboldt was in second, and with baH of the moto remaining Bussey pulled 0[[ the track for unknown reasons. Evans was gone for good and took the win, although Womboldt did manage to make upa liuleground late in the race. Worn boldt's 3-2 earned him second overall, and Klein came across third in the moto for third overall. Results PEE weE: 1. Jimmy Williams (Yam); 2. Dennis Turner (Kaw). MINI BEG' 2-: 1. Yarrow squeaksout Bakersfield win By Scott Daloisio BAKER FIELD, CA, NOV. 3 Duane Yarrow of northern California made the long trip down to the Kern County Fairgrounds in Bakersfield a profitable one as he made a clean sweep of the Scratch side of the program on the second Saturday night of the season. Yarrow (Snooky Owens/San Jo e Wheel Works/Bob Agness Leathers/ Cancilla Motors Weslake) took the lead in the main from the gate and led into the first bend. outhern California rookie Rich Sweaney, who was coming from the pole, shot under Yarrow for the lead as they exited turn two. Sweaney's move was a shocker but he immediately began to mak.e believers of everyone as he moved away from Yarrow. It looked as though Sweaney had it in the bag, but the wi Iv veteran turned on the throttle near the end of lap three. Yarrow charged up to Sweaney's rear tire in turn two on the final go'round. Yarrow definitely came in a little too hard and could have given the young ter a shot as they came off tum two but he masterfully avoided it. At that point it again appeared that Sweaney would ",in his (irst ever Scratch main, but Yarrow again charged into the next corner and got the drive as they exited tum four and headed for the checkered (Jag. The finish brought the crowd to their feet and the win was Yarrow's by a knob. Sweaney took a hard-to-swallow second with Steve Crawford third. Sweaney (Jawa), who was sporting a brand new pair. of leathers, had a much better time in the Handicap main. Coming from the zero, he was out-dueled by Joe Kreisberg for the lead on the stan. Kreisberg held the top spot until turn one on the second circuit when he crashed. That put Sweaney into the driver's seat, far ahead of the pack. Colorado's Scott Ormiston was second until Andy Northrup breezed by on lap three. Northrup wa the fastest rider on the track but had no chance of taking the lead from the long-gone Sweaney. orthrup hung on for second while Crawford again took third. Doug Bowers (Jawa) moved up to Second Division and led wire-to-wire for hi second Bakersfield win in as many weeks. Second spot went to Vic Robledo with Don Butler third. Fourth spot went to Robledo's sister Valerie. It i believed to be the first time that a brother and sister have ever competed in an AMA speedway main event. First year rider Ron Swenson (Wes) raced home first in the wild Third Division main over a fast-closing Don Jackson and Tony Sanchez. zr--------:;--------------=-------o en ~ ~ 00 Q") Results SCRATCH MAIN:'. Jim Vreeke (3) undressed on the front straight at Willow Springs, allowing Todd Brubaker (930) to take the 750cc Superbike win on his Honda. ~ r:--~~;;:=~~_ § « o ~ o u en > '" o Brubaker breaks Vreeke's streak in b :r "- ARRARR By Lori Tyson RO AMO D, CA, NOV. 4 Jim Vreeke's eight-month stranglehold on the American Road Racing Associa tionl Willow prings Superbike Series wa finally broken as Starfire Racing's Todd Brubaker snagged the win and the $300 first prize money. Vreeke led off the line, as usual, but this time Brubaker stayed on his tail. "I just wanted to let him go, I knew I could get him at the (finish) line," said Brubaker. Brubaker stayed glued to Vreeke's rear wheel, despite a missed shift in the seventh lap. But in the ninth lap (of 10), Vreeke suddenly slowed, and Brubaker went by. "A gust of wind literally undressed me," explained Vreeke. "I slowed down and tried to zip my leathers up, but couldn't. I think I could have held him off the last couple of laps. But I knew if I was going to get beaten, Todd would be the one to do it. I'll get him next month." Brubaker wasn't happy about the way the race ended either. "I wanted to ee it come down to the line, to really beat him," aid Brubaker. But he had already beaten Vreeke earlier in the day, in the FI match. Vreeke holeshot the start, and led the first two go-'rounds; Brubaker took over on the third circuit, 250cc ace John Glover stuck to his tailpipe_ The order remai ned unchanged until the sixth lap, when Glover grabbed the premier position over Brubaker, with Vreeke right behind. But the race wasn't over yet - it came down to a drag race to the line with Glover winning by haIr a wheel over Brubaker. "I can't let these Superbikes keep winning," said Glover later. In 450cc Superstreet, Paul Van Zuyle and Mike Haller went to war. The two RZ350 pilots swapped the lead several times a lap the entire racel In the seventh lap, they tested each other, each waiting for the other to brake first entering turn one. They held it on. held it on - and both missed the turn. Van Zuyle went off into the dirt, while Haller used up the very edges of the pavement. Van Zuyle dirt-tracked his way to the Scratch main winner Duane Yarrow leads Andy Northrup in tight speedway racing action at Bakersfield's Kern County Fairgrounds, entrance of turn two, shut the door on Haller, and resumed the race. The finish was so close, each man thought he had won. The scorers weren'teven sure who had won, but it was decided that Van Zuyle had taken it by an inch. teve Dilallo and Chris Grabau had another close race in the 450cc Production class. They were side-byside and wheel-to-wheel most of the race. When it came down to the dash for the checkers, Dilallo, aware that Grabau was on his tail, started weaving wildly, trying to break the draft. It worked, and Dilallo was the victor.
