the race, though, as the new 490
Yamaha wasn't yet broken in.
Third in was Viewfinder MC
member Barney. "'1 blew [he shock on
a bomb TUn Saturday and real1y wasn't
going to ride but 1 decided to ride and
take it easy and try LO fini.sh. Then
when 1 got LO the starl and the base
gasket was leaking, I thought it just
wasn't my day, but I got a real good
start and just cruised. I was real surprised to finish this good" said
Barney.
Fourth overall was Cory Timms
(Hus) who shouid do well here; he
lived in Randsburg for many years
and this is his back yard. John Rudder
slipped in for £ifLh overall on his
Cagiva, beating Ron Shuler (Covina
Yamaha) who had worked his way
up LO fourlh overall before smashing
his head pipe on a rock just before
Timms ,and Rudder got by. First
Amateur was Russ Warne in at a very
good ninth overall. First 175 was
Duane Summers (Cag), no surprise,
edging out Greg Johnston (KTM).
First Novice was unofficial1y Mike
McDonald (Hon) who still won after'
fixing his thronle. Second Novice
was Vere.ran 250cc rider Rene Reese
that showed rhe kids the older guys
can go fast, too. Gary Christie took
third Novice and first l75cc. First
Novice Senior was Ed Hales beating
out Harold Denning.
Ralph Garren got LOwed across the
finish line after his Husky's ignition
died, only his second race in seven
years. Garrett, a long time Hollywood stuntman, is a charler member
of the Viewfinders MC and was running around 40th overall before his
bike's dem ise.
First Woman in was Diane Holeman (Hus); Team BMW's Baja 1000
race coordinator Dave Holeman was
waiting to congratulate her. Joanna
