sure on Stork for the first two laps, umil Stork wem off the course, giving Friend the lead. At the end of the lap, Stork pulled alongside Friend on the two from straightaway jumps, then dove underneath Friend to take the lead. Stork began to pull away as the race progressed, with Molder dropping a bit back in third, but well ahead of Kevin Forrester. Stork wem on to take the moto ahead of Molder, as Friend wem down in the late going. Forrester lost fourth to Lynn Hyde at the wire. In round two Stork again took command from the start, as Friend and Molder tried to make a race out at it. Despite Friend and Molder staying right with the leader, Stork took the second moto, overall and series victory for the 250cc Pro category. Friend wound up second in the day's overall ahead of Molder, but in the final poims tally, Molder grabbed second, just seven poims ahead of Friend. Friend needed to finish in the top five to take the 125cc Pro class title, but Stork and LeeVern Berry were trying to up-end his chances at the title. In round one Friend took the lead with Berry and Stork behind, and Molder right on their heels. The leading duo pulled away from the pack quickly and set up a fierce fight for the lead. Going imo a left-hand sweeper, Berry worked inside of Friend and slipped underneath for the lead. Friend stayed right with Berry, and a few laps laLer Stork, aboard a 1985 CRl25 Honda, was in the running for the lead. Friend wailed until four laps from the finish to retake the lead, and Stork too slipped by as the trio worked through lapped traffic. Stork took control Lwo laps from the finish. Friend kepL his pace, and' wem by SLork La recapture first place. At the finish, Friend took the mota by a bikelength over SLork and Berry, while Molder and Waugh. rounded out the top five. Stork flew out of the gate in the second 125cc Pro moto and immediately took command as Friend, Berry, Molder and Jerry Wagner followed. This time Stork kept pressing the pace, and Friend could not g~t alongside the leader. Stork took the maLo and overall win, but Friend's second in the mota and overall gave him the series Litle. Berry picked up third, which kept him ahead of Stork for the series by a slim four poims, while Molder suffered a flaL rear Lire and slipped La fifth overall behind Jerry Wagner. After the final race of the day, all the Pros hopped aboard minicycles Lo compete in an all-Pro mini race, which proved as exciting as the day's action. Berry took the holeshoL and Friend found himself once again trailing the Kawasaki, but on the second lap moved into the lead in the same spot Berry used Lo overtake Friend in the 125cc hattie. Berry kept close to Friend, but had to seule for second in the five-lap race. Molder picked up third, slipping past Stace Waugh halfway through the race. Results 125 PRo: 1. Billy Stork (Hon): 2. FrIend doubles at BRA/Spearfish AtX I By Brien George SPEARFISH, SO, OCT. 7 With only two more rounds of motocross racing left in the Black Hills region of South Dakota, close to 100 riders came OUL to Spearfish Raceway to compete in the final regular poims-paying race of the 1984 Borderline Racing Association Championship Series; the only remaining event left for compet· itors being the double-poinLs Championship finale the following week in Sturgis. Spearfish Honda's Mike Friend, aboard an American-Handa-backed pair of CRs, ran away with both the 250cc and 125cc Pro class overalls, losing only one of the four motos on his way to the victory. All LhaL was lefLfor theoLherriders to compete for was the Open Pro honors, which wem La Lynn Hyde, also Hondamoumed, after a fierce struggle with Perry Bicek. For the 250cc Pros, Friend took the holeshot in round one and pulled OUL La a comfortable margin over Dave Molder and Billy SLork, and the trailing duo foughL laLe in the moto for their pas iLion. SLork could not get into second until the halfway mark, bUL Friend was well ouL fronL by Lhis time. Stork gave the race a shot, but his bid fell only a few bikelenghts short at the finish. Friend took the maLo win with Stork second, Molder third, Lynn Hyde fourth and Stace Waugh fifth. Again Friend took the holeshot in round LwO, bUL this time Molder stayed righL on his rear fender. Four laps imo the race Mol~e~ we.m by. All Friend had to do was f101Sh 10 second to take the overall, so he began to cruise behind Molder. But Stork began Lo close the gap steadily, and with a few laps to go was within striking distance. Seeing his cushion deflate, Friend got back on the gas and passed Molder on the uphill double-jumps. Molder and Friend diced again for a while but at the wire Friend went home'with his second overall win for Lhe day. Stork picked up second overall for his efforts, wiLh Molder, Waugh and Hyde trailing. In the Open Pro action, K.im Bendigo grabbed the holeshot 10 mota one with Bicek, Al Hermansen and Hyde in tow. Hyde wem down early and had La chase his way back up to the leaders, as Bendigo and Bicek fought heavily for ~he. front spot. Bicek took control wHhlO four laps, and Bendigo soon found Hyde going by, which set up the race for the lead between the two riders fighting for the points lead in ~e series. ~yde tried La work past BlCek, but Blcek came ouL on top at the wire. Hyde finished second with Bendigo third and Hermansen fourth. Round LWo saw Hyde take control right from the start, while Bicek wem to the.turf early. He remounted and charged hack to the leaders, but in his efforts LO get by Bendigo, Bicek went down again. Hyde was pulling outto a comfortable margin by Lhis poim, but Bicek would still not give up, and once again began La work on .Bendigo. However, as before, Bicek wenL a liule too sLrong in his efforts to get by, and once more took a trip to the ground. This was all Hyde needed to cruise in for the second moto and overall win, while Bendigo pulled in for second on both tallies. Hermansen took Lhird ahead of Bicek, but fourth behind the Honda rider in the overalls, wiLh Walter Mueller rounding out the Lap five. .i I I •• ,. I ~ ... , ~ I, t.
