It was a question of nat running out of time as when the white flag came out Thompson was right on Cannon's rear wheel and even closer at the cJieckered. Kane was in for the third and Jay Lewis on his ABd. Suzuki came up with the fourth .• Jim Kesler, after being 'a hridesmaid so many times, came up with a sweet win in the Open Expert half mile and it was close. Kesler got the nod off the line and took his Pro Rider Yamaha to the front and locked in. Kenny King, who has just joined the Expert ranks, was in the second slot with Dan Kane third. Two laps , into the race King got high and Kane got underneath to take over second. From there on out Kes,ler had !lis hands fult as Kane came at him from all directions to get by. Winn, Church, Earle clobber AlbanySX By Clay light ALBANY, OR, I 24 ocr. 21 Team Green Kawasaki pilot Paul Wino continues to amaze all on hand with his smooth" consistent riding styie at Albany's AMA District 28 supercross. ' Winn topped both 80cc Expert motos, while fellow KX rider ayne Church also made a sweep, this time in the 250cc Intermediate class. Richard Earle did the diny deeds in the Pro class on a 500 Honda. The first of twO combined Pro outings had David Livingston (Yam 125) lead the field fInd take command over ex-Mini rider Craig Lamben (Yam 125), E.arle (N-D/Seer/BelRay/Hon 500), Dave Cotter (Kaw 250) and David Fox (Yam 250). Livingston rode quite impressively throughout the shon and soupy moto. Lambert rode a lonely second until taking out the banners and putting himself midpack. Earle pushed into second, but Livingston was long gone. On the final lap, the Yamaha speedster crashed, putting Earle into a late-moto lead that he took to the checkered flag to beat Livingston, Coner and Fox. Moto two had Earle pull the holeshot and leave the fighting to Cotter and Fox, both on 2505 while the 125s ran distant, thanks to the powerrobbing, water-fillea whoop-de-doos. Fox and Couer provided the fireworks with their display of various lines which sent Fox down in the confusion and gave Earle yet another big lead. Earle pushed his LOP Honda across the line for a I-I tally over Cotter's 3-2 and Livingston's 2-4. Winn rode to unbelievable leads in a combined 20-rider Mini class on his KX80, and from the very stan, destroyed the field. Monty Spaulding (Roseburg Hon-Yam) and teammate Ryan HuHman (Yam) chased Winn as did Mike Sorenson (Yam) and Mike Johnson (Yam). The Intermediate bailie went Spauld, ing' way, long after Winn cruised into the pits with Sorenson nabbing Johnson and Huffman for the runner-up honors. MOIo two saw Winn lapping rider on lap four. Corona ST/HM -Cannon-ized By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA, ocr. 14 It was a s.ad night at Corona _ Raceway because the man who created the track against great odds passed away while visiting relatives back east. Felice Lipari gave (]at track racing a local home and made it possible for new riders to learn and grow into Pros. Many have done so at Corona and have gone on todistinguish themselves in the world of oval racing. He always had a soft spot in his heart for the oval races and stuck by them as their popularity declined. The world is a bener place for his having been here: a man who loved young people racing. It was Curtis Cannon night at Corona Raceway and he could do no wrong. The Open Money short track was the first event to fall as Cannon went wire 10 wire for the win. Marvin Honeycull got by Boddy Sanders on the second Lap 10 take over second. The 250 Money half mile turned out to bea duel between Don Ambrose and Cannon when Mark Ledbeller was sidelined with mechanical problems. Ambrose is just starting to get his feet wet in the Pro ranks and is giving more than a good accounting of himself. He may not have beaten the seasoned rider, Cannon, but he sure let him know he was there. The closest anyone came to beating Cannon was in the Open Money half mile. OCT. 19 The Mini Intermediate class was the scene of a close battle tonight at Corona Raceway: Steve Womboldt and Kevin Bussey exchanged wins as they managed 10 stay within inches of each other during both molOS. Novice Robert Shipman (Shipman Carpet/Raw) led WombOldtand Bussey at the stan of the first moto, riding more like an Intermediate, as he held both riders off for over half the race. Womboldt (Dallas Baker/Kaw) trailed in second while Bussey (Kaw) clung to his rear fender and moved into the lead on the third lap. Bussey couldn't make it by and stayed in third but kept heavy pressure on Shipman as they all rode within bikelengths of one another. Heading to the white flag, Womboldt collided with a lapped rider that had fallen. Womboldt didn't crash but came close. Then Shipman slammed into both riders and crashed. Bussey was able to get by without any problems and went on to take the win. Womboldt freed himself and came through a few seconds back, while Shipman finished third and first in his class. Bussey shot into the lead at the start of moto two whjle Womboldt trailed, only this time they didn't have to worry about Shipman because he start,a in the second row. Wornboldttook the lead on the first Lap, yet Bussey stayed in Wornboldt's tracks; Bussey stayed in Womboldt's tracks; then, on the fifth 1ap, he bauled his way into the lead. The lead didn 'tlast (or long, though. On the next and final lap, Womboldt struck back and held Bussey at bay to take the win and overall. Expert winner Mark Dwyer (Hon) was a distant th'ird. Shipman easily won his race and will be racing with the intermediates next time. Honda-mounted Kenny Maddux had a relatively easy time taking the 250cc Novice win. Maddux worked his way into the lead in the first molO at the half way point, leaving Rob Carpenter (Yam) to take second. Maddux came back in the second molO and led from start 10 finish, as Carpenter stayed close for a couple of laps.before losing sight of him. Results PEE WEE 9-: 1. Mike Meuger (Hon); 2. One-hundred-fifleen riders from the five-stale region surrounding the Black Hills converged upon the city for the event. Three overall victories for the season were available to the Pro riders, as coming in to the final event no-one had a certain lock on the points totals, although Billy Stork seemed virtually unstoppable in the 250cc Pro class, and Mike Friend had a comfortable margin in the 125 division. For the Open Pros, Lynn Hyde came in to the final sporting only a nine-point lead over Perry Bicek, and the difference between first and second place for the overall winner Sunday was 10 pojnts. Hyde went home the victor. In the 250cc Pros, Rice Cycles' Billy Stork jusl needed to finish in the lOp five for the series overall. At the start of the first molO, Stork took the holeshOl' with Friend and Dave Molder right behind. Friend put pres-
