New AFM number one Walter Nino (9) trails in third. ber-three corner and Shaw picked up the second-place slot. Powers developed fuel problems on lap four and drifted out in turn three, taking Shaw with him as Fivecoat stayed on the pole for the lead and Hodges moved under Powers for third. Shaw went by Fivecoat down the back-straight and was again in the lead. As Powers dropped out on the white-flag lap, Hodges passed Fivecoat inside in turn four and took the final lap in second place, as Northeast Suzukisponsored Shaw took the win. John Gladwill got the holeshot in the Open Pro short track main, followed by Scott Scherb and then Charlie Orr. Scherb went to the outside to come out of the number-two corner with a good drive into the lead, and Orr went inside on lap two in the same corner and passed Gladwill to take over second. On lap four, Orr again went inside coming out of turn number two 10 take the lead, but lost it on the next lap as he went off the groove in loose dirt. Scherb stayed on the pole for the point. Positions held to the checkered flag and Scherb's Gilbert PortjngService XR500 Honda took the win with Orr in second. Gladwill and West wound up 3-4. Results SHORT TRACK 50: 1. Joshul Jon.. Heare, Dauth dust Saylands MX By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, OCT. 3 The 23rd week of Continental Motosport Club-sanctioned motocross was once again given increased excitement by con- 34 ducting the races in the reverse direction. Although a difficult course lO master there were a few riders who demonstrated how quickly they adapt to the new format. Chief among these were John Dauth, a self-sponsored Pro Honda rider, and his understudy George Heare. In the first 2S0cc Junior molO, 13 eager racers mashed as one into the first corner and all miraculously made it through. When they did begin to stretch out some it was Paul Midson (Suz) the early leader with Tony Peixoto (Hon) in close pursuit. Back in third and closing was Heare, who received pit board signals from "Coach" Dauth on every lap. Whatever the signals were, they worked, for Heare began a charge lO the lead. He had it briefly but Peixoto successfully fought to get back to the point just before the checkers'came out. In moto two Frank Walker asserted himself and guided his Yamaha missile into the lead. The pack of riders hounding him the entire distance was made of Heare, Peixoto and Wayne Emerson (Hon). Challenges abounded but passes were nullified in each instance by a repass and the moto ended with Walker in command and Heare second. Heare's 2-2 evening wa good for the overall gold. The Pro class hit the track and the real hard racing began. Early leader Greg Raub (Yam) had no sooner tarted what looked like a winning rhythm when he fell and gave the lead lO Tony Richards. Richards withstood the heavy pressure of Dauth and Sam Nava (Hon), who tried so hard he recorded three falls d uri ng - the moto. Nava's final spill came in a last-ditch effort lO pa Dauth wherein he crashed and neflrly lid across the finish line for third. Bin Avery brought his Kawa aki home for third before ava could get orted out. [n their final molO the Pro again put on a fantastic display of ra ing. Bad luck returned to Richards a he crashed while leading, and although unhurt, wa aD F. Nava was again the spoiler, pushing hard to get by Dauth. In the end Dauth held, ava faded to fifth, Raub brought his Yamaha in Lor second, persistent Avery got home third again. Results 80 NOV: 1. Jason Warren (Kawl; 2. D.J. Noe(Yam). 80 JR: 1. The Open Money TT had two races going. with the bottom three battling just as hard as the top three. Off the line it was Jeff Johnson who locked his Honda into the top spot and didn't give an inch to anyone. Right behind him and almost riding double was Dan Ingram from Clermont, Indiana, and rounding out the field was Curtis Cannon. The second se~ of three was led by Bobby Sanders wllh Ross Klatt and Eddie San Roman chasing him. There were no position changes but each group of three was so closely bunched that the smallest mistake would have meant position change. As it was no one made that mistake and Johnson struck gold first. In the 250cc Money half mile it was a case of experience holding school for the inexperienced. Chris Cannon was the master of the day and Brian Barrick and Matt Stoutenberg the pupils. The only pass of the race came on the second lap when Stoutenberg got by Barrick for the second. The Open Money half mile, the race everyone came lo see, had II Pros on the line. At the drop of the flag it was the Shell Yamaha of Curtis Cannon out in front followed by David Miller (from St. Peters, Florida), Eddie San Roman and Johnson. On the second lap Johnson passed San Roman and was bird-dogging Miller. Ingram was also starting to work his way into the lOp spots as he got by San Roman and went to work on Johnson. Chris Cannon, last orr the line, -was still trying to sort out his problems and about the sixth lap he got his Harley motating and began picking off riders. Tim Hampton out from Wichita, Kansas, was sidelined with bike problems just shy of the halfway mark of the 15-lap main event. Meanwhile, way out in front was Curtis Cannon. Miller, aboard Roger Thompson's Harley, was giving a very good accounting of him elf by holding orr all attack by Jobnson. When it was all said·and done it was Cannon in the winner's circle followed by MiUerandJohn on. Ingram, an Roman and Chris Cannon rounded out the top six. Results TT PEE WEES: 1. Calia, Holt bon to CRC Dunes MXwins By Greg Barbacovi VALENCIA, CA, SEPT. 30 With only 11 points-paying events remaining on 1984 calendar, the race for the top number plate in the 125cc class is boiling down. to Intermediate rideL Ray Groom and ovice ace Scott Murphy. A fried ignition forced Groom to compete in the Open class (which he won) so Murphy was looking to pick up the points that the large 24-rider Novice class wouJd offer. But when the gate dropped, it was Suzuki-mounted Johnny Calia who snared the holeshot with Jeff Clark and Kenny Maddux behind. He led the whole race and followed it up with a third-place showing after the second molO to earn the overalJ win. Clark fell during the second round givi!1g Maddux runner-up hon'ors: ed.gmg out fast-finishing Robbie Sunton (6-4) who took third. The most exiciting race had to be the 125cc Intermediates. Van Nuys Cycle-sponsored Mercedes Gonzales gave all the pit tootsies something to cheer about when she led the pack of 13 into the sandwash. Bryan Nelson and his Kawasaki took a lap and a' half to finally edge by with Curt Trimble and Tom Holt only one second behind. Holt was next to move, and by lap five, had begun to push Nelson for the lead. Meanwhile, Gonzales pulled lO the side of the track, complaining of stomach cramp. ext lap was the white flag which motivated Holt lo edge ahead: Nelson regained the lead a t the end of the wash and took a_ four-length cushion. However, Holt refused to roll over, and at the new tabletop jump, flew into the lead for good, Next time out, Troy Welty surprised everybody with an eight-second lead after the first lap. Nelson was in third .while Holt got stuck in fifth. Once again, the sand wash was where Nelson and Holt made up the most amount of time. By the third lap, Welty was only up three feet, with Nelson and Holt nearly even. Nelson went through a mall water hole while Holt snared the quicker, drier lme to the Left, giving him a shot at Welty. They ran together through the and and under the trees out in back before Holt finally found room lo move into first place. He quickly bUilt a four- econd gap during the next two laps, and finished with a big seven-second lead over el on, with Welty taking third. Results PEE WEE: ,. Robby Hammond (Vam~ 2. Nick Lyon (Vam).
