Sears cheers: Nitto AFM number one ',ta'ian Stallion' va'iaminMRANHS Walter Nitto reached the end of his season-long attack on the American Federation of Motorcyclists number one plate with By Wayne Gaies EL DORADO CANYON, NV, SEPT. 30 With the hot Nevada summer nearly over, Las Vegas-area desert racers started the fall season with the Motorcycle Racing Association of Nevada-sanctioned Groundshakers back-to-back race. The race was held this year at the tOP of Nelson Pass, only a few miles from historic El Dorado Canyon, site of some of the richest gold mines in southern Nevada. Vegas Cycle-sponsored, M-Starmounted Anthony Pasqualollo took both ends of the days' Open Expert action with a perfe t I-I. The first rdce wasquite a dice, though, between the "Italian Stallion" and Parker Arizona ace Jimmy Means Jr. Means took a commanding early lead early on, only to have Pasqualollo reel him early in the second lap. When Pasqualotto measured Means for the pass, he took the wrong line and ended up on his head. He remounted and gave chase, but had lillIe chance of catching the flying Arizonian, until Means bailed heavily on a downhill, suffering an apparent fractured arm. He remounted, broken arm and all, and finished second I Pasqualotto had no problem with the seco.nd race, with Jim Thompson taking second. Roger Hinkey took both Open Amateur classes and Ted Tafras and Dale Wallis each took an Open Novice race. The most furious dice of the day was in the l25cc class as Ronnie "Bones" Odorn surprised both the number-one and number-two 125 riders in MRAN with back-to-back wins on his Sportsman Cycle Cagiva. "I had to win the first race," said Odom. "I didn't have any brakes!" Ameritone Paints-sponsored Paul Kline was hoton Odom's tail in both races, racing within inches at times, but unable to go by. David Heesch was also in the thick of the battle, and finished the day with a 3-3. Lee Pearson took both Amateur races and Randy Simpkins and Dale Wallis split the Novice.c1ass. In the 250cc Expert class it was Sportsman Cycle/Cagiva Support rider "Kool" Kevin Welch all the way. Welch's ride was so effortless it looked easy, but it wasn't as Husqvarna-mounted Daryl Folks and AI's Cycle Yamaha-mounted Troy Fitch are no slouches, with each taking a second. Barry Frehner took both 250cc Amateur races and Val Maden and Mario Stadtlander each notched a Novice win for the day. In Class 38 Max Switzer did a lillie Frontier 500 tuning up with both wins whi,le Big Ed Sivon took his KTM to the win in both Class 30 events. The Minis had one tough course to deal with, all virgin and with some eye-popping downhills to contend with. First 80cc Expert went to Ken Arnold with Mike Palmer taking a second. Blake Mimms took firstAmateur with Jeff Kochomer in second. Ronnie Titus took the 80cc Novices and David Stoner captured second. In the 60cc class Randy Klessig took the overall win, while Steve Fecteau took second. Jason Candelgrig topped the HONDA; • By Roger Smith SONOMA, CA, SEPT. 23 an untouchable lead in the overall points standings four races from the end of the season: He captured the numerical win with racetrack victories on his 593cc Champion-Moriwaki GPz in Formula 2, 600cc SupersLTeet, and 600cc Modified Production. He didn't race the box stock bike that has a Iso garnered i.ts share of LToph ies and points this season. Ni 110 led flag to flag in the 600cc Superstreet race for a clearcut victory but there was plenty o(excitement in the battle for second place. Also, the race was the first AFM outing for a Yamaha RZSoo, with Wade Boyd in the saddle. The bike, reportedly flown in from France, was so new it still had a luggage tag on the handlebars. When the green flag dropped, Nitto shot into the lead and wa never threatened. After one lap Mark Ruffner wa in second, with third changing hands repeatedly. Included in the battle were Tom Chew, Ed Ragle, Tom Montano, Allan Yarrow, and a host of others. Meanwhile Boyd was working out the kinks on the RZ500, very tentatively since he had virtually no time on the bike and the nearest spares were 5000 miles away. He appeared to be taking it very easy mid-pack, but any time he'd crack the throttle, the bike would go into warp drive and two or three more riders would be behind him. At the three-quarter mark, Ruffner suddenly found Ragle and Chew in front of him. The three-way battle for second was shaped up as a real dogfight. Boyd had worked his way up to a distant fifth place. Ragle, Ruffner and Chew were racing wheeiLO wheel - and took the white flag side by side. Unfortunately other parts of the track are not so wide. Ragle took a line too tight and too hot through the turn seven hairpin, trying to prevent a pass. Ruffner, running alongside Ragle, couldn't avoid the crash and both left the track. Nittowon easily and Chew took an uncontested second. Boyd • cruised home for third. Results FORM I; 1. Denny Doherty (Kaw);2. Edwin Woo (Yam); 3. Richard Seoular (Kaw). FORM II: 1.
