The other three have management
that sucks.
Honda spends money, they deserve to
Win,
But a one-brand race is really a rin!
Udo and company are picking the
Cherry,
Their total control is almost scary.
198.'1 is over, Rainey i gone,
Kawasaki decided to ing its swan
song.
Yoshimura tried, tOO, with limited
success,
Without ractory help, they're only
second best.
Ohl What about Yamaha, the music
company?
Where in the hell is the rumored FZ?
so there it i , Daytona '85,
Is it true or is it just jive?

Ponca thunderstorm
Dreier on wilderness
Regarding Michael Mueller's letter in (Cycle News, September 19), I
would like to comment on his observation that the race should have been
stopped due to a thunderstorm. As
the orricial announcer ror the Ponca
City Grand Nationals, and the an·
nouncer who was working at the
time or the storm, I reel that I can
c1ariry the situation.
First and roremost, it should be
known that we did;in ract, have upto-the-second weather inrormation
available at all times. In ract, both
Steve Lamb or WBBZ-AM, and Jerf
Geurin or KLOR-FM were constantly
advising me as to the situation. As
KLOR also has the only weather
radar in Northern Oklahoma, we
were instantly made aware or any
changes in the storm. I was also con·
stantly on the NMA radios with race
director Ted Moorewood and MA
president Ron Henrickson, keeping
them aware or the situation. At no
time, was the weather/race/communication situation not being totally
monitered.
Regarding the excellent photo in
Cycle News that Mr. Mueller mentioned; I was looking at the starting
line at the time that lightning bolt
£lashed, along with several people
from Ponca City. They all assured me
that, regardless or how it looked, that
bolt was at least several miles away.
At that time, there was no rain, only
some very strong winds, which by
themselves caused no hazard to the
racers, as the dust situation was well
under control at that time. It should
also be remembered that a race can be
stopped with very little warning
shou Id it need be. And £i na II y, races
have been run under many times
worse conditions, both at Ponca City
and probably every race track in the
country.
I do not wish to make light or Mr.
Mueller's concern. Rather I only want
to point out that the situation was
totally under control, thanks to the
excellent preparations and coopera·
tion with all the wonderrul people or
Ponca City.

Thank you ror contacting me to
share your concern ror the Calirornia
Wilderness' Bill under consideration
in Congress. I appreciate your
thoughts on this issue.
As you may know, the House passed
H.R. 14.'17, the California Wilderness
Bill, on April 12, 198.'1, and the Senate
Energy and Natural Resources Committee recently reported this measure,
which was a result or a compromise
between Senators Wilson and Cranston to put an additional 1.8 million
acres or state wilderness under Federal
protection.
I completely agree that the proposed 1.8 million acres is excessive,
and I will not support legislation
which would needlessly tie up recreational lands and important resource
and commercial development. I believe more emphasis should be placed
on the protection and maintenance
or existing wilderness areas rather
than increasing the burden on the
Federal government beyond its capability to protect these lands.
I appreciate your concern ror the
excessiveness or this legislation, and
will certainly keep your comments in
mind as Congress continues to address
this issue. Please reel rree to contact
me again should you have any additional comments or concerns.

Ode to 1985 Daytona 200
March is coming, the 200 will be
here,
Honda is grinning ear-to-ear.
Kawasaki and Yamaha will not race,
Suzuki will show, but will not place.
Spencer and Honda will be tough to
beat,
The poor privateers reduced to dead
meat.
No sense crying about Honda megabucks,
