YEti YEARS AGO Harley-Davidson rider Corky Kemer won the battle when he took the Terre Haute (Indiana) Half Mile. Yamaha's Kenny Roberts, however, won the war when he finished second and clinched the AMA Grand National Championship for the second year in a row. Roberts' runner-up finish was also good enough to clinch top spot in the three-race Camel Pro Series. Triumph rider David Aldana finished third at Terre Haute. The Toledo (Ohio) Half Mile was the night before Terre Haute and it featured a Harley-Davidson sweep of the top five places. Rex Beauchamp took the win after leading most of the way, and Keener topped Gary Scott in the battle for third. Scou's third place kept his title hopes alive - for a liule while, anyway. The fourth round of the U.S. National Observed Trials Championship found BulLaco rider Lane Leavitt capturing the win in Escoheag, Rhode Island. Leaviu's score was 4.5 points better than that of Momesa's Steve Darrow, who took second over Marland Whaley (Mon). Husky's A.C. Bakken added to his collection of AMA 0-37 desert race overall wins with one in the Desert Vipers hare and hound. Honda rider Wayne Cook led at the end of the first loop, but Bakken soon passed him and Cook dropped even further back when he broke a shock. Q.) ..0 o ... u o Dateline: September 16, 1984 Willow Springs Raceway Prior to the Kerker 100 Superbike Race at Willow Springs, Supertrapp boasted how they would dominate the event. Now that the racing's stopped, the final results clearly show what pipe proved its superiority Kerker, the same pipe that's dominated Superbike Racing since 1981. Kerker, the pipe that captured an unprecedented 3 consecutive National Championships. The score: Kerker's four entries, Roberto Pietri, Canadian Superbike Champion Reuben McMurter, Chris Crowell and Vince Costa all finished in the top 10. Team Supertrapp? A Corona (California) Raceway shon track and half mile featured a double winner in Honda rider Wayne Rainey. Rainey took the 125cc Expert class in both venues, besting Gordie Kidd in the former and Mike Tidwell in the latter. Second in the class went to Jim Connelly on anoLher Pursang. Joe Guglielmelli and Marv' Heath finished first and second in an observed trials event in Gold Bar, Washington. The finishes gave them the number one and two plates in the Pacific Northwest Trials Association, respectively, with one event left to contest.
