By Brad 8t Sharon Jones
HEPLER, KS, SEPT. 2
AMA Pro ]eff Schumacher carried his weigh t to win the third
round of the Hepler Anniversary series in both the 125 and
250cc Expen classes. The Circle W
Recreation track was prepared for dry
weather, but a rainstorm hit at the
end of practice and never let up. As
the track-conditions got steadily worse,
most of the classes opted for one moto.
In the 125s Jack Lamben blasted
out ofthe ga te for the holeshot, wh iIe
Schumacher started mid-pack. By the
end of the first lap however, "Schu"
was out front and flying! Ok.lahoma
ace Clay HoenshelJ was near last on
the stan, but passed riders right and
left till he moved past Lamben for
second. Hoenshell made some time
on Schumacher, only to DNF on the
last lap with a seized motor. "Flyin'
Brian" Emig flew past several riders
to finish third.
Schumacher was at it again in the
250cc Experts, riding as if traction
was perfect. John Lamben got the
holeshot, but Schumacher was leading in a short time. Lambert cruised
in for second, while Brad Locke took
third. Hoenshell did not ride his 250
because of too much mud in his eyes.

While much of central Ca!,ifornia harvested crops, the precursor to fall returned for the
annual Labor Day weekend
short track at Hills Ferry Raceway,
AMA District 36 style.
Chris Carr departed the Camel Pro
Junior National Championship tour
to get his last year of school started,
winning the 500cc Expert main and
showing of( his number one Black
Plate while Mark Key topped the
250cc Experts.
After boiling down the five 500cc
Expert-class heats and semis it was Ben
Zakarian taking the jump in the main
on the Zak's Auto Rotax. Paul Iwanaga and MPE Honda were being
chased heavily by Sal Ho[fman and
Carr with Shawn Black in fast pursuit.
In three laps Carr hooked up the
Ron Wood Rotax and split, opening
up a lead that go, ever wider to the
checkered. Hoffman led the rest of
the troops wi th Iwanaga holding off
Blac.k and Adam Sabedra for the
checkered.
Randy Gonzales returned to the
racing scene after a few ~onths off for
the win the 500cc oVlce class but
that was nothing like Kenny Peshel's
five-year layoff. Peshel rebuilt a
buddy's 350 Bultaco Astro and returned for a fine second over Rob
Bacosa's BuJtaco.
Key got the right stan in the 250cc
Expert show and held oU the hard
advance of Carr on the Jorgy's CanAm. Jon Nunez and theSaJinas Cycle
Salvage Suzuki sat on third spot for
the distance, hoping one of the two
would make a mistake but none was
forthcoming and so he took third
over the Family Cycle-Center Kawasaki of Craig Scroggin .

tles in 10 classes were up for grabs to
those who accumulated the most
points in the five-round, 10000y series.
The only 1983 state champion to
keep his title was 250cc Expert Scott
Davis of Soldotna. By doing so Davis
now has an unbelievable string o[ 14
state titles in his 10-year racing career.
Davis easily won all four motos of
the weekend on his Anchorage Cycle
Sales' Yamaha, leaving the others
behind to battle for second. 1983
125cc Expert State Champion Erik
Munson took second each day and
wound up third overall in the series
on his Northern Power Sports' Yamaha.
Kevin Schaub, riding a private
I-Ionda, had placings out of the top
10 due to a broken ankle but took
second in the series. Schaub cut his
cast off a few days before the race,
wrapped his ankle, stuffed it into an
overstze boot and got enough points
to keep second.
The race of the weekend was in the
I 25cc Expert class where Kelly Butler
aDd joe Good crossed handlebars
every moto, keeping all the spectators
on their toes. Moto one on Sunday
had Good on a self-sponsored Kawasaki besting Kawasaki Cycle Cache's
Butler at the checkered flag. Moto
two seemed to be a repeat but this
time Good and Butler got a little too
clo e and both went down in the last
corner. Butler got up first to take the
moto win and the overall.
Monday's first moto found the duel
still going on with Butler in first by
the moto's end. The second moto saw
Butler involved in a [irst tum pile-up
and Good out front. Butler worked
his way through the pack but a crash
took the steam out of him and left
Good with the win and overaJl. Butler
ended up third in the moto but wasn't
too disappointed as he crossed the
finish line as the new 125cc Expert
State Champion.
Anchorage's young moto sensation
Jeff Roskelley almost went the entire
series unbeaten in the 500cc Expert
class but a seized engine in Sunday's
first moto stopped him at 18 motos.
Last year's 500cc Expert State Champion, Jeff McDonald of Fairbanks,.
rode his Anchorage Cycle Sales' Yamaha to victory in both of Monday's
motos. MacDonaJd, with more metal
in his leg than on his motorcycle,
rode weJl despite a still-healing femur
broken in May. Even with two D Fs
Kawasaki Cycle Cache-sponsored
Roskelley had enough points to become the new 500cc Expert State
Champion.
Roskelley also tried to take the
250cc Expert title from Davis but a
season of crashes and mechanicaJ
fai Iures left him out of the top 10.
The only racer to win two titles
was Andy Workman. Workman took
self-sponsored Kawasakis to c.hampionship wins in the 80cc Expert and
I25cc Intermediate cia ses.
