would be a new champion. Last year's champion. Eddie Ingels is in England, and 1982 Champion, Dennis Robinson is retired. There is an old saying about speedway championships - It is never over until the last checkered flag. It was illustrated and proven beyond a doubt at Auburn tonight; the final race of the 1984 season. For Duane Yarrow there were two races in his life tonight. The question was whether the stork, or the NorCal' Championship would arrive first. The stork waited. and Yarrow's extremely expectant wife was in the grandstands. The three "stars" tonight were Yarrow, David FariaJr.,and Mike Delacy. Delacy had been dubbed the odds on 'favorite to take the championship, considering his recent record on the northern California tracks, as well as his performance in the qualifier rounds. Going into the final round tonight. Delacy was the only rider with a perfect score. It looked like he had it in the bag. Yarrow, having experienced bad luck in his second round ride. scored only one point, putting him two points down. It was a ditto situation for Faria having taken second place in earlier rounds; he too was out of it by two points. All Delacy had to do in event 20, his final ride, was to place first or second and the NorCal Championship would be his. It was a sad case of "so near and yet so far" as Delacy experienced mechanical problems on turn one out of the gate. Faria lOOk the event 20 win which would have meant so much to Delacy. That win, aJongwith Delacy's last-place finish. turned the whole situation upside down, and threw Faria and Yarrow into a runoff tied with 13 points each. This would decide thefirstand second place positions; Delacy had clear claim to third place. and the runoff turned out to be controversial. At the gate in runoff number one Yarrow, on the outside, slid out and was down. Many fans and officials say that should have been the finish. The referee Dane Besneatte, decided to go by the rule that a restart is indicated when half the field is down. ordered a restart. In runoff number two. it was Yarrow in the lead at the gate. where he remained for four laps, grabbing the checkered flag. a northern California tradition, for the victory lap. Duane Yarrow was the 1984 orCaI Champion. At the conclusion of the introductory Riders Parade preceding tonight's Championship. 1983 High Point rider.
