By Bruce Scholten KENT, WA, AUG. 5 Along with regular AMA D-27 road racing, the Can-Am Series attracted road racers to Seattle International Raceway. Morn- 42 ing thundershowers dampened the qualifying heaLS, and during the lunch break, Clarke-Simpkins Honda's Steve Dick glanced at the skies and said, "I've been holding of[ removing rain tires from the Interceptors until we can tell what the weather does." After that he borrowed compressed air from crosstown rival Robert Holden and went about mounting regular covers. He made the right decision, because the rain held off through the afternoon's eight-lap main events. Vancouver Suzuki's "hired gun" - New Zealander Holden - is givingtw~timeCanadian SuperbikeChamp Dick no quarter in the Can-Am Series. After three rounds Dick held a slight advantage, but Holden gained ground in this event. Dick defeated him twice, in 750cc Production and Formula One, but Holden apparently emerged with 55 championship points to Dick's 40, as a -resuJt of a seventh- place finish in 600cc Cafe and a second to class leader Chuck Wiley in Superbike. Up from Portland, Oregon, Keith Pinkstaff ran an FJIIOO in the 0-27 Open Production class, run concurrently with the 750cc Can-Am. Pinkstaff took the overall win ahead of Steve Littlejohn's Katana 1000 and Joe Davis' tiny G 550. In the Can-Am Formula One £inal, Davis got a great start on his Renton Suzuki-sponsored mount. At the apex of turn two Holden's G 1150 surged past, but Davis got the drive out of the corner and was first to the downhill esses. ext time around Davis was in fourth position with Holden just in front of Dick's VFIOOO and Randy Skiver's 750 Interceptor was nipping at their heels. Holden and Dick continued LO lap side by skde, with Skiver occasionally getting sideways as he attempted LO make up the displacement di££erence. Meanwhile, Dale Franklin eased his MOLOrcycle Works Yamaha TZ250 past Davis and into fourth, then took Skiver for third. On the white-flag lap Franklin held second briefly, but Holden took it back at the checkered flag. After his seventh-place ride in the Laguna Seca Superbike final, Skiver's priority is securing the number one plate at S.I.R. To that end he took the overall Superbike victory for 0-27 points, and snuck past Jeff Morrow's Interceptor for the 860cc Cafe win. Results 600 PROD: 1. Joe Davis (Hon); 2. Kirk Correll (Han); 3. Kadlec dominated the Expert class after dicing briefly with local hotshot John Dickerson. Kadlec was not satisfied with just the Expert class; he improved his lap times and captured both mOlOS. of the Enduro class as well. The nasty downhill double proved to be no problem for Open Expert winner Gary Catalino while local rider Ben Peterson had to settle for second. Barry and Bryan Carson, who stopped for the race on their way to California, dominated the Mini Expert class and showed their aerial talents with some outstanding maneuvers and general hang-time. Locals could not seem to buy a gold all afternoon. Jeff Hamilton scored a silver in the Novice class; Joe McElroy took a silver in the Open Amateur; Torry Carroll came from behind to wrap up second in the 125cc Amateur class; and, Morrill Griffith followed Kadlec to a second in the 250cc Expert. Flores, Gardner grab Santa Clara MXwins By Stoney Ryan SANTA CLARA, CA, AUG. 3 More than ISO riders were on hand to take on the challenges designed into th~ Santa Clara Police Athletic League track by Larry Kleist of lap Promotions. In the I25cc Pro class:Tony Flore came back from a short layoff from racing LO aggres ively attack and win overall. In the first moLO Flores got a mid-pack start. Pushing hard, he moved his way up, passing Honda pilot Dennis Hannel on the first lap and JeH Pestana's Honda on the second. By the third lap Flores had caught the leader, Kawasaki rider Dean Matson. In an exci ting four-lap battle, Flores tried every trick in the book to overtake the leader, but Matson knew them all and kept closing the door. The battle ended when Matson and Flores tangled handlebars and Flores went down, allowing Pestana to take the second spot. But not for long. Flores soon overtook Pestana but didn't have enough time in the moto LO catch MaLSon. In the second moto it was more of the same: Matson leading early; Flores charging through the pack. Again a fantastic four-lap battle ended when Flores took the lead on the back straightaway. Matson fought back, pressuring Flores the last lap, but Flores was too strong and held on to take the checkered £lag. Matson took second overall, Hannel third, Jack Hulse fourth. After breaking his bike in practice, Johnny Gardner borrowed a CR480 Honda to compete in the combined 250cc/Open Pro class. Although having a horsepower advantage, Gardner's unfamiliarity with the big bore Honda lead to a third-place start behind the 250 Hondas of Greg Pennington and Hannel. It took Gardner three laps to adjust to the horsepower of the borrowed bike and on the fourth Gardner passed PenningLOn for the lead and raced on uncontested LO the finish. PenningLOn finished second, Tim Tremaine's Yamaha was third and Hannel, whose bike stalled on the last lap, came in fourth. In the second moto.. it was Hannel racing in h is fourth moto of the night who dominated the fast-pace race from start LO finish, holding off a lastlap challenge from Gardner. In the final tally, Gardner took the overall, Hannel second, Tim Tremaine third. Results VET SPTSMN: 1. Jeff Burnen (Yaml; 2. Jim Ricci (Suzl; 3. Bill Burnen (Yam). VET MASTER: 1. Mike Lane (Honl; 2. AMESummer Series finale to Petralia By Tom Griffith VALENCLA, CA, AUG. 3 .The II th Summer Night Motocross Series, hosted by American Motocross Enterprises and sponsored by Budweiser, came to its conclu ion on the Indian Dunes International Track. Nicky Petralia took his Suzuki Van Nuys mount to a long overdue 125cc Beginner win with a 2-1 score ahead of first-moLO winner Rod Walton (Hon). Petralia breezed to his second-place finish in moLO one, being content to wait to mount his challenge of Walton's first place. As the dust and smoke cleared at the drop of moto two's gate, Walton was caught back in the pack and Petralia had to contend with Jim Mours and Jehrod Thames, who kept their bikes ahead of Walton but still applied pressure LO Petralia's Suzuki. Taking the checkered first was Petralia followed by Mours' Honda, the Kawie of Thames and Walton's CR. The I25cc Juniors saw the night's largest field and the return after many moons of Gary Szilagyi aboard a Mean Green machine. With 18 riders battling, Szilagy fell into third behind Denny Jones and Andrew Olivia. Robbie Stinton kept his Honda in the hunt and £inally passed Szilagyi in the closing laps of the first mOLO.
