With Berry, Poitra, Mintyala and Wagner all charging from behind, Friend and Peters set 'out away from the pack to do battle, and late in the moto the action was fierce. Friend tried everything he had to get by Peters, but could never mount a lasting threat for the lead, Finally, in the last straightaway heading toward the checkered flag, Friend made a Ilastditch effort at first place over the plateaujump, and nearly flew over Peters. The Yamaha pilot landed with his YZ wide open, and Friend blasted his CR to the stops, but the finish line came just inches too soon for Friend, as he lost the moto win by the width of the front wheel. Peters took the moto, but in the overall Friend had a lock on the win, taking the top honors ahead of Peters. Berry wound up third in both the moto and overall, with Poitra fourth in both tallies. Michetti started lheday well with a commanding holeshot ahead of Race Tech's Bill Scott (Hon) and Yamaha World's Jonnie Deremo. Sunwest's Tommy Combs was mid-pack off the start, and problems on the first lap set him further back, but by the end of lap two he was fighting for third with Montclair Yamaha's Keith Williamson. Michetti was untouchable by lap five, mostly due to Combs and Williamson dealing with slower riders and, by the halfway point, lapped Intermediates. Scott faded towards the end, letling Williamson, Combs, and Honda-mounted Greg Nash slip by. Michetti cruised through the checkers first followed by Williamson,-Combs, Nash, and Greg Fountain (Yam), who passed Scott only two laps from the finish. SCOtt holeshot the second moto followed by Combs, Williamson, Michetti and Nash. By the second lap Combs had stolen the lead from SCOtl, and Nash had passed both Michetti and Williamson to move into second. Nash looked like he had a point to prove as he was riding his tired '83 Honda at its limits but still found a line around Combs to take the lead by lap four. Michetti got by Combs on the fifth lap and proceeded to reel in Nash and take the lead by the halfway mark. Nash did an admirable job of holding second place until the se· cond-to-last lap, when he dropped to fifth for unknown reasons.
