Furman strikes
twice at Alliance
MX
By Karen Dans
ALLIANCE, NE, JULY 22
Rick Furman stole the show in
the 60cc Expert classes at the
Alliance mQtocross for the big
Heritage Day's celebration in
western Nebraska. Mounted on a
Rocky Mountain Kawasaki, sponsored by Alliance Kawasaki, Furman
took the winner's circle in every moto
including the 80cc Expert competition.
In the first 60cc Expert moto, Des
Piihl was the first rider outofthe gate
but was heavily pursued by Furman
through the series of jumps and into
the S turns. Furman quickly took
over the lead during the first lap and
extended his advantage in a hurry.
Furman easily held on to claim the
win ahead of Piihl and Ryan Twogood.
Furman's win in the 80cc Expert
class was a bit harder for the Kawasaki
pilot. In both motos, Furman stole
the holeshots but was closely pursued
by Jason Hirter. However, by the
midway point of both motos, Furman would pull away for dualing
wins. Eric Gonzalez was also a tough
contender in the second moto, by taking care of Hiner for second, and
second overall.

McMahon returns
and wins at Corona
By Nate Rauba
CORONA, CA, JULY 27
The I25cc Pro class had one of
its best turnouts of the year
tonight at Corona Raceway
with nine riders entering to
battle for first-place cash. Malcolm
Smith Racing/Yamaha rider Vince
McMahon returned to Corona and
picked up where he left 0(£ - in first
place.
A light rain shower fell as the first
moto got underway, and it was Sunwest Yamaha's Mark Decker leading
Brandon Schneider (FMF/Cagiva)
and John Slavens (SoCal Racing
Fuel/Kaw) through turn one. Decker
quickly opened up a small lead over
Schneider, who had McMahon breathing down his jersey by the second lap.
As Decker began to run into 250cc
traffic from the first line on the
fourth lap, Schneider dumped his
bike in the first turn and handed
second to McMahon. With Schneider
out of his way, McMahon began to
slowly bite into Decker's lead. But at
the same time McMahon was losing
some ground to a hard charging
Mark Lopera (Bills Pipe /Sunwest
Yamaha), who had worked his way
into third after a poor start. With two
laps remaining, McMahon finally
caught Decker but couldn't get by.
McMahon would get very close in the
hills, only to have Decker gain a few
feet in the infield and especially
through the stadium whoops. Lopera's spark plugcap came off on the
same lap, dropping him to sixth. As
the white flag flew Decker held the
lead by mere inches and again gained
a few feet in the whoops. But McMahon fought back, went to the inside
through the back turn and took the
lead. Decker came back coming into
the infield and stuck his front wheel
under McMahon but could only rub
knobs. McMahon held on in.the final
turns to take first ahead of Decker.
The start of the second moto belonged to Decker again, with Lopera
and McMahon a close second and
third. Lopera wasn't content with
